The liver is an very important organ as it is the seat of the five digestive fires of the human body and also the converter of plasma into blood.

So, from an Ayurvedic point of view, the liver is the master manager of the entire body.

However, the liver is vulnerable to a large number of disorder also.

One of these is the abnormal enlargement of the liver, which is known as hepatomegaly.

Also called: Hepatosplenomegaly, Enlarged liver, Splenomegaly
Hepatomegaly is a condition characterize by the swelling of the liver.

It could be caused by many factors which comprise "Infections, excessive use of alcohol, amoebiasis, hepatic tumors, toxic belongings of medicines, or metabolic disorders".

It may or may not cause jaundice. If both the liver and ill temper are exaggerated then this state is known as hepato-splenomegaly.

Causes of Liver Enlargement

1.Alcohol abuse can be term as one of the important causes of liver enlargement. Excessive use of alcohol can cause liver cirrhosis, alcoholic hepatitis and fatty liver, which can cause the liver to enlarge.

2.Viral hepatitis can cause liver enlargement in children and adults. Hepatitis A, B and C are viral diseases that can cause inflammation of the liver tissues, leading to an increase in its size.

3.Non alcoholic fatty liver illness is also characterized by buildup of fats in the liver and liver enlargement. Obesity, diabetes as well as an unusually high level of cholesterol in the body, are careful as the risk factor for rising this condition.

4.Another state associated with liver swelling is congestive heart failure where the heart fails to supply sufficient blood to other organs of the body.

Treatment of Liver Enlargement

Treatments for an enlarged liver depend on the condition cause the enlargement. If the cause is alcohol abuse, then the treatment is to stop eating alcohol.

When hepatitis B or C is the cause, you may have to take medication to lessen the swelling.

(In the case of hepatitis A, there is usually no action prescribed.) For nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a person must take on a weight-loss program, engage in a regular exercise program and keep blood sugar and cholesterol under control.

Home Remedies for Liver Enlargement

Liver enlargement treatment - Daily intake of long brinjals (Eggplant) helps restore the liver to its innovative position.

Mixture of two grams of Sprague powder, half-gram salt taken twice a day after meals with water cures all liver and spleen evils. This is one of the good home remedies for liver enlargement.

Drink spearmint juice with additional sugar for 10 days. This is one of the best liver enlargement cures.

Take juice of 2 oranges empty stomach for 5-7 days. This is good home remedy for liver enlargement.

Take one and a half gram jaggery and Chebulic myrobalan’s peel powder in equal amounts and make one tablet out of it. Take one tablet daily in the dawn and evening with warm water for a month. This is good liver enlargement remedy.
