Living And Learning In The Future

By: FIRELEAVES Home | Business | Sales

The seven personae are the roles that will give students the dexterity needed to work in the world they will enter in the coming years, where up to 40% of the workforce will be independent consultants (Fisher) and nearly all of the fastest-growing jobs (US Department of Labor) require a complex array of skills that can only be obtained through postsecondary education. All of these roles require us to think and teach in new ways that are only now becoming apparent to us with Breitling Replica(http://www.kopeez.com/B-Replica-Breitling-Watches-19.html) some urgency as we strive to make sense of and find our place in this new "post-American world" (Zakaria).

This is the future we must imagine, the one in which our students will live. These are the personae they will adopt and adapt as society and the workplace evolve. Some will wonder where literature is, where culture can be found in this model. Yet I see our rich tradition of literature and language, rhetoric and composition, prose and poetry already existent in all these roles. It is simply time to reimagine how our discipline might be reenvisioned. As Robert Scholes argues in The Rise and Fall of English: Reconstructing English as a Discipline:

From the viewpoint of the field of English this conflict [between literary and artistic values, on the one hand, and the commercial and competitive values on the other], can be seen in terms of the long struggle between literature and rhetoric for cultural dominance. Now, and the signs of it are everywhere, the pendulum is swinging back to rhetoric. Not only is our world dominated by political and advertising rhetoric, but literary texts themselves now appear to us more and more as instances of interested rather than disinterested language. . . . We must rethink the relationship between textual representations of all kinds and the things that are represented in those texts. (20)
It is, it seems, truly a brave new world unfolding around and before us. Moreover, it is one we are called to help our students not only understand but also to create, for theirs is the largest generation in the history of the world, one that will need all these roles if they are to enjoy the success they so easily imagine Omega Speedmaster Replica Watches(http://www.fashion-replica.com/GoodsSeries/Speedmaster-297.html) will inevitably be theirs. And it will be, theirs and ours, if we can make room for such imagination, creativity, and innovation as today's classrooms need if tomorrow's students are to succeed,
