London Calling: A Great Gig Destination

By: Paul McIndoe Home | Arts-and-Entertainment | Music

As you’d expect from a city the size of London, there are a large number of venues that play host to live music events, featuring famous artists from all over the world. Some are renowned for their amazing atmosphere, others for legendary gigs they’ve hosted but whatever the venue London is a great place to catch a gig.

Wembley Arena was originally built for the Empire Games in London back in 1934 and was known then as the Empire Pool, as it included a swimming pool. The arena underwent a massive facelift at the same time as Wembley Stadium was being redeveloped, costing 35 million. The new and improved venue was officially opened to the public with a concert by Depeche Mode. The venue certainly has a fantastic history and Sir Cliff Richard clearly enjoys the atmosphere; he will make his 60th appearance at the venue in November 2008. Since reopening, Wembley Arena has attracted a diverse range of artists, from Girls Aloud to The Eagles and it remains as popular as ever.

Carling Academy Brixton was formerly known as The Astoria, The Sundown Centre, The Fair Deal and up until 2004, The Brixton Academy. It has a capacity of just fewer than 5,000 and the building only became a music venue in 1981. One of the most famous gigs to be held at the venue was The Sex Pistols comeback gig in November 2007. Its popularity amongst music fans is reflected in the numerous best venue awards it has received from NME Magazine over the last decade.

Earls Court dates back to 1937 when it was first opened as an exhibition centre. Since then, the original Earls Court has been extended and now includes Earls Court Two, which is linked to the first building. The list of artists who have performed here over the years is a real who’s-who of the music industry; including world renowned artists such as David Bowie, Queen and The Rolling Stones to the more contemporary Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay and The Kaiser Chiefs.

There are many more truly memorable music venues in London and throughout the year you’ll be able to take in a wide assortment of artists, from those just setting out on the road to stardom through to multi-million album selling acts that will blow you away. And with so many clubs, bars and hotels in London it’s a great place to visit and immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere.
