Long Term Care Insurance Will Protect Me

By: Julienne Howard Home | Finance | Insurance

With a tinge of arrogance in my tone I told the agent, a friend of my cousin’s, I already have a health insurance courtesy of my employer but he insisted that he’s talking about a different thing. Long term care insurance, he says, is a product which offers what is not offered by the standard health insurance.

What is not covered by health insurance? I asked myself. It covers practically one’s entire body; everything from head to foot like vision and dental services. When the agent mentioned assistance in the activities of daily (ADL) all the more did I find the guy queer.

First of all, nobody in my family died paralyzed. Secondly, my grandparents died in their mid 80s †my grandfather was 84 while my grandmother was 82 †in the comforts of their home. Few years before their death, they just had my aunt clean up their place every other day and do small errands for them.

Now my parents who are in their 60s are still at the prime of their careers. They still frequent the gym and they don’t eat anything that has meat. What’s more, they’ve not smoked a single cigarette since birth. Health freaks indeed so I can’t help but wonder why this friend of my cousin’s who works for a renowned insurance firm that sells LTCI insists that I will need long term care at some point in my life.

I thought sharing my family’s health history in detail will change his mind about me but it did not. Instead, he veered from the topic and focused the conversation on my present health condition. So I told him that I haven’t been to the doctor for ages as my job requires me to be on my toes round the clock.

At the mention of my job, he tells me that this is a determining factor of LTC. Waking up at 5 a.m. and retiring at 1 a.m. according to the articulate broker makes me at risk of heart diseases. Staying awake, and not just awake but busy, for 20 long hours and getting only four hours of sleep is not healthy.

Should I Buy Long Term Care Insurance?

That got my attention. No one in my family suffered from a heart disease so I can’t imagine myself coming down to such illness.

I admit that I’m not very conscious about my health. Aside from my poor sleeping habits, I can live on cold cuts and canned goods which then make me an excellent candidate for high blood pressure.

Before dinner ended, my cousin’s broker friend told me that what we have discussed is just an overview of LTCI and its benefits. As for my health risks, I have yet to visit my doctor to check the present state of my health. Once I have the results in hand he told me to contact him anytime so that we can discuss the quotes.

With my poor sleeping and eating habits, I just hope that my application for long term care insurance still gets to be approved. In a positive tone, he says negotiation will soon be underway.
