When I attended the E-Myth Academy in December of 2000, Michael Gerber said, "Show me a small business owner, give me a mirror, and I'll show you what their business looks like". This hit me like a ton of bricks. Up until that point, I thought I would be able to create a successful company, fulfill my dreams, and live the life I wanted, simply because I was a "business owner", not because the company was a direct reflection of me. Was I even a business owner at all? No, what I actually owned was a full-time job with bad hours and no benefits. I knew deep down that this must change, I just didn't know how to change it. So I began seeking more business education. I didn't know what I didn't know. This is fine, but we all must realize that there is a lot we don't know. It's a fact in business and life, and it can open ourselves up to be available for the education we need to receive at certain times in our careers. Simply put, when you look in the mirror and don't like what you see, figure out what you can do to alter the reflection. I chose to focus on this topic right now because it's a very easy time for any of us to blame outside conditions for our results. Many leaders I speak to are having a difficult time right now. I get it. Fine. It's not as easy as it once was. But, it is what it is, so as a leader, what are you going to do about it? Your company is a direct reflection of your own beliefs, motivation, and implementation. At Peterson, our sales are down significantly from last year to this year. Last week's headlines reported that our market has the largest one-year vacancy rate in the country over the last 12 months. Big deal, it is what it is. I'm not attempting to sound like I don't care or things are easy breezy, but I want to illustrate that however myself and my General Manager John choose to respond to the current economy will beexactly how Peterson responds as a company. Leadership is a responsibility we have all decided to take on. We need to realize that our own thoughts, feelings, and actions are the ingredients which have created the recipe we now call our companies. This is a wonderful realization, because it gives us the awareness of our ability to change the ingredients if we choose to redesign the recipe moving forward. You are in control of your own destiny, my friends. When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Take a good, hard look. If you're not seeing the company you want, or the person you desire to be, then begin right now rethinking the way you've always done things, making the necessary changes. Pretty soon, you will begin getting the results that you desire and deserve, and stepping back to admire the new reflection you've created in the mirror.
