Looking After Your Mobility Scooter

By: Michiel Van Kets Home | Home-and-Family | Babies-Toddlers

Starting to find it more difficult getting around? If your joints are starting to ache and you're not as nimble as you used to be, then it might be time to consider getting a mobility scooter to make life easier. There's no need to forgo your independence with a scooter as it can solve all your problems, it means you can still do everything for yourself and don't have to rely on others for shopping trips or to visit friends.

Electrical scooters are simple to use, inexpensive to run, and involve very little looking after. The most difficult thing is choosing a model to suit your requirements as there are so many different kinds on the market.

The first thing you need to do is identify why you want a scooter with regards to whether it will be used indoors or outdoors as this will affect the size, power and maneuverability, as well as the price.

When looking for the perfect model for your needs don't just be swayed by a low priced model, it doesn't mean this will be the best one for you. Buying a machine that's reliable and safe should be the main concerns, test out different models for their capability and functions as you don't want the hassle of changing it after just a short time due to it being inconsistent with your needs. Always test drive your chosen model for comfort and ease of maneuverability.

Once you have made all the important decisions and made your purchase you need to take care of it, although reasonably priced they are not cheap and you want yours to last as long as you need it. Learning how to maintain it will ensure it continues to get you from place to place for a very long time. The most important aspect is to have it serviced regularly so any damage or wear and tear can be assessed and repaired. This is also important for safety reasons.

Keeping your mobility scooter nice and clean will prevent dirt and grit from getting into the moving parts and causing potential damage, this also applies to getting it wet. Although they are weatherproof on the whole it's advised to store it in a garage or under some kind of cover when at all possible to reduce the effects of rust and extend the appearance of the fabrics.

Always read the manufacturers guidelines before using your new scooter as they will advice you on how to keep it clean, regular maintenance, and how to charge it so you get the maximum travel range. Charging the battery properly is also important and should be done only with the supplied equipment from your manufacturer in a dry environment.

Scooters that are designed specifically for indoors shouldn't really be used outside as they're not made to be as durable against uneven pavements and the elements of the weather as outdoor ones are. You will only end up causing damage to it if you do this, if you think you need it for outdoor purposes then purchase an outdoor one and save yourself a lot of hassle and money in the future.

A well-known model such as the Mayfair Mobility Scooter is reliable and a favourite as it's economical, has a good ground clearance and is large enough to offer comfort to all its owners. With a range of up to 32km and a maximum speed of 8.4km it offers independence for those who like to travel first class.

The Heartway Royale 4 is another option for a quality ride with its 16'' wheels and pneumatic tyres and full independent active suspension it can tackle any bumpy road with ease. With the additional feature of an LCD display panel so you can easily see the speed you are going at, the state of the battery and the temperature, this is a distinctive model with style and comfort.

Before you buy a mobility scooter from any company ensure they include national coverage and full warranty. If there should be any problem then check they come to you and you're not responsible for delivering it to some far off destination to be fixed. Upon delivery they should assemble it for you and complete a safety check as well as demonstrating how to drive it safely and other practical issues. Only when you are totally happy with the answers should you then go ahead and purchase a model to your liking.
