We are not getting the same amount of sleep that we got fifty years ago. In fact we are sleeping nearly two hours less every night. Very few of us get anywhere seven or eight hours sleep. So what\'s all the fuss about? Do we really need all that amount of sleep? The whole matter of sleep has arisen because scientists think that it is having a bad effect on our health. They point to the fact that in the same period the number of people who are either overweight or obese has increased too - they think there\'s a link.nnDo you know how much sleep you get? What sort of sleep do you have? Is it restful or restless? Do you wake up frequently or not at all? nnYour sleep and the type and quality of sleep that you get, is very important. The problem today is that we all lead such busy lives that sometimes we just don\'t get to bed early enough - or we\'ve been up watching television until the early hours.nnScientists have discovered that there is a correlation between weight and the amount of sleep that we get. When we don\'t get enough sleep our body complains. Our brain interprets this as being a sign energy deficit and immediately fires up our appetite.nnBeing a thoroughly efficient organism, the body tries to replace this supposed energy deficit by requesting high-calorie, high-energy food such as candy and sweetened cereals. Now you know why you want frosted flakes at breakfast time!nnIt\'s not difficult to see why weight gain can be a consequence of lack of sleep. We need to have between 7 and 8 hours sleep every night if we are to be able to work to our optimum. If we continually have less sleep than we need, the more overweight we are likely to become and the quality of the sleep that we do get will be poor.nnIf you are trying to lose weight, why not start a new chapter in your life by getting into the habit of getting more sleep? To lose weight permanently and enjoy a slim, new healthy life, you need to get the habit of sleep.nnPut another way, you need to develop a sleep habit and to do that you need to practice - that doesn\'t sound like such a bad idea, does it?
