Low Tech, Big Cojones

By: Kenneth Ragpala Home | News-and-Society | Dating

Ever wonder what kind of world we all be living in if we do not have mobile phones, PDA’s, and laptops to go with us everywhere we go? Of course, most people from our age would dread such thing. Mobile communications and entertainment have rooted themselves deeply to our culture that continued existence without these gadgets would seem unthinkable.
In retrospect, our forefathers endured snail mail and writing long letters on parchments using feathers. But the word â€endure†may be not the best verb to associate with such an archaic way of communication. Cinema and literature have visibly portrayed that writing letters was a very enjoyable activity, depending on the circumstances involved, that is.
And then technology came and brought us Nokia, Motorola, Samsung mobile phones, along with Nokia accessories, Motorola cell phone accessories, and Samsung cell phone accessories. Sure, the results are quite obvious: from any view point, people would say the world has gotten a lot smaller and the pace of life much faster. But if we take a look around, can we answer ourselves this question: Was it for the better?
Quite a simple question, actually. Probably, the yes’ would probably overwhelm the no’s by a large margin, nay, by a landslide. Ask them why they answered yes; pretty much there are logical explanations than illogical ones. Being able to keep in touch with people that matter most, like your family and friends, is quite rational, any way you look at it. But keeping in touch was not only the cell phone’s specialty. Courting and pursuing a romantic relationship, for instance, has reached another level. No more do we, the male of our species, have to suffer moments of complete awkwardness when talking to a girl and asking her for a date on a cool Saturday evening because we can now say ourselves out loud. First, we have to get our prospects’ cell phone number though, and that can be brutal.
Back in the old days, a man coming up to the girl of his dreams was a measurement if he was man enough. The results differ by degrees. But coming up to a girl and asking her out straight to her face, risking rejection and ridicule, was a manly move, no doubt. Whether the girl accepts or declines the proposal will depend on how the proposal was made. Another manly move, if a man does not have enough big cojones to walk and talk to the girl flat-out, was sending her a love letter. Using all skills in language, grammar, and manners, a love letter can spell a date. But it can be treacherous if it falls in the wrong hands. But then, asking a girl out on a date has always been 50-50. Whether it goes on way or otherwise was a matter of choice and luck.
Such ancient and primitive practices of revealing romantic interest were traditions amongst men. And these traditions were eradicated by the emergence of cell phones. Why risk being humiliated and rejected in person when you can just send her a text message or an email? Cell phones have provided men who are not very good at girls or who get tongue-tied when speaking to females a safer way of getting the message across. No dangers, just clear cruising all the way.
Quite effective these past few years but what it has been missing is the element of being a man. A man with big cojones, that is. Are you a man? Then go out and ask her personally. But do that within parameters though or you will just increase the probability of you getting the NO.
Be a man. Resurrect traditions.
