By: Frank Froggatt Home | Home-and-Family | Landscaping-Gardening

You can damage the look of your landscape by selecting the wrong landscape lighting, but on the other hand if you select the correct lighting, you can unbelievably augment the attractiveness of your home. Knowing the kind of Lighting that is going to suit your home is vital to choosing the right fixtures. You can get the feel that you've always been dreaming about as long as you take care to find out what is going to work in what is not going to work for your landscape.

Aesthetic beauty isn't the only thing that outdoor Lighting is good for, it is also good for security. When the winter months come on, and the days get a lot shorter, outdoor Lighting can provide you with that extra light you need to spend a little more time in the great outdoors. If you plan it out right, you can also create incredibly nice and cozy place for you and your guests to hang out at night.

Kinds of Outdoor Illuminating

There are four categories of outdoor Lighting that you can consider:

Security Lighting: Security Lighting is used for providing it to areas where intruders might want to lurk. It is advisable though to keep it away from the living areas so it's not distracting, as the lights used are bright, and often motion activated. Most of these lights systems also have an override or you can keep the light either on or off thereby bypassing the motion sensors.

Job Lights: The purpose of task Lighting is to perform a specific duty as in providing light when you're outdoor grilling, or giving you night when you need to walk up and down steps or along pathways. You should always places these lights so that they are between your eyes and the object that you want lighted. Make sure that there isn't any glaring caused by the light, as an overly bright light will blind you rather than help you.

Lighting for Accent:This type of Lighting can be used to highlight features of your landscape, or create different dramatic effects. For example, uplighting can illuminate an interesting piece of statuary. If you want to create a silhouette effect, you can do this by placing the light between the object and a wall or a fence. You can also provide ambient Lighting which helps people to feel comfortable in the environment.

Starlight or Moonlight - You can also imitate moonlight or starlight for creating magical Lighting. You can mimic moonlight by placing some lights up in your trees. The lights should be pointing downward to create a dappled effect, as if the area were lit by a full moon. You can produce a somewhat starlight effect as well, which is incredibly nice. This can be imitated by suspending tiny lights in the branches of a tree to create a sparkling night time canopy, or by using flickering candles, sprinkled here and there throughout the space.

Tips to remember:

No matter what type of effects you are going forward your Lighting, try to be careful not to do too much, as a little bit less can incredibly make for a nice setting. If Lighting isn't necessary then do not use them, and you can also make a incredibly nice little effect by using a low wattage bulb. Another thing you need to be careful about is not sending light upwards. Never use lights in straight lines up and down paths like the airport runway effect which is a incredibly common error.

Keep away from using yellow lights as they are unbecoming to both people and plants. Instead use blue-white bulbs or purchase daylight-blue filters for your fixtures. Always place the lights where they are easy to get to so you can change the bulbs. After setting up your outdoor Lighting, get outside after dark and light up the night!
