Make Your Engagement Special With Pearl Rings

By: Johnn Smith Home | Shopping-and-Products | Fashion-Style

Everyone wish to try something unique when it comes to choosing the engagement rings. Though diamond engagement rings are the usual choice among couples, some of them like to try creative and inimitable ways. Pearl engagement rings are not the typical choice but they are lovely and classic alternative for representing your love. Basically pearls are taken from oysters and mussels which create the beautiful gemstone by covering a foreign object such as a pebble or grain of sand using a protective covering called nacre.

When you think about pearl, the first thing that comes to your mind would be a creamy white and luminescent coloring. But pearls are not limited to one color itself. They come in a variety of colors including gold, cream, black, blue, pink and green. Most of the pearls would have a main color with another shade as an overtone or highlight. The value to a particular stone is determined by the combination of these secondary shades. A white pearl with pink hues would be considered as one of the most expensive and most popular pearl colors.

There are many attractive shapes in which pearls are available. A pearl in perfectly round shape is considered as the most valuable one. However the most common choice for pendants and earrings is the pearl which is tear-dropped in shape. Baroque pearls are the name given to unique shaped pearls. The ways in which they are weighted and measured make each pearl different from the other. Usually the weight and size of most of the gemstones are referred to in carats. But pearls are measured in millimeters. Here also the natural pearls are exceptions which are solid in carats.

When you are choosing a pearl, it is good to consider certain factors. Since the pearls are porous, they have the capability to soak up other substances. So it is necessary to ask the jeweler if it can be buffed away in case you notice a large blemish. A crack in the surface of the pearl would cause problems in future. So look for any such signs. A pearl would look shiny if it has good and uniform luster in a pearl. This can be clarified if the pearl appears gleaming under a fluorescent light. You must have a clear understanding of the processing treatments undergone by the pearl like beeswax. Sometimes beeswax is added during pearl cleaning and it can affect the luster of the stone. Also you must know about the thickness of the nacre. There is a prominent method called the tooth test to determine if the pearl is real. Natural pearl would feel rough against a tooth.

The pearl engagement rings are in fact more expensive than a traditional diamond engagement ring. This is because even though the pearls are cheaper, a pearl ring can be more difficult to set than a more durable mineral gem. The final cost of the engagement ring would determined after considering several factors like the quality of the gem, the design of the setting, the value of the metal used as band and also any other specific customization.
