Make Your Small Business Go From Good To Great

By: Kyle Farrah Home | Business

Many people have read Good To Great by Jim Collins, it is a best seller, and has sold over 2 million copies. Good To Great shows what "Great" companies do differently from "Good" companies.

The book focuses on larger public companies so it is hard to apply to small businesses, however there still is some valuable ideas that you can apply to your small business, if you look for them.

Here are a few things that you can use from Good To Great to make your small business more succesful.

1) Hire Really Good Employees - Make sure that all of the employees that you hire, are very good. Don't settle for anything less than greatness. If you want to make your company great, you must first start with the people.

2) Become a "Level 5 Leader" - In Good To Great Collins explains something called a "Level 5 Leader". Essentially this is the ideal leader for running your business. The main "Level 5" charecteristics are: Humility, Will Power, and a Deep Concern for the companies success. Try to develop these charecteristics yourself.

3) Be the best - Become the best at something. First find out what you can be the best at, and then proceed to become better than anybody else who sells that same product or service. You don't need to be the best at everyting, you just need to become the best at one thing. For example if you sell clocks, you need to offer the best price, the best quality, the best service, or something else like that. If you can't become the best at one of those things selling clocks then find something else to sell. Make sure that your product is better than the copetitions in some aspect.

4) Find Your Core Values - Find out what your company cares deeply about. It may be the environment, it may be health, it may be quality, or perhaps it might be price. Just find out what your company wants to do to help other people out.

To do this ask the following question. "What is the reason for my companies existance besides profits"? Once you have that fiqured out, you know your core value(s). Now work on that core value, and make sure that your companies employees know what your core value is. This gives your employees (and you) a reason to wake up every morning, and go to work enthusiastically, knowing that they are making a difference in the world.
