When you are getting ready to move into a new home or are planning on relocating for a job, have you thought about what you are going to do with your car? What if you have multiple vehicles? If you are moving to a new house that is located near to your current home, then it may not seem like that much of a big deal, but what if you are relocating to another state several hundred miles away? Prior to moving, it is recommended that you go through all of your items and organize them so that it becomes easier to put the right items in the right boxes, etc. Going through all of your things will also help you to recognize which items you probably don't really need. There are many people who would be appreciative of some of the things that you would have just thrown away. Items such as old clothes, toys, gadgets and appliances are just some examples of things that you can easily donate. Besides this, when you donate to places such as the Salvation Army, you can request a receipt and use that receipt to write off your donation on your tax return. Having moved into various apartments throughout college and beyond, I can certainly attest to the fact that while the idea of moving into a newer and greatly improved location is exciting, the very thought of having to go through all of my things was daunting at times. In college, I found that I didn't really have too much in the way of personal items. However, after college, it was a different story. Suddenly, you realize that you have acquired furniture, appliances and perhaps more clothing. You then realize that you can no longer simply fit everything into your car in one trip. Especially if you know that you are moving into an apartment that is located farther away, it doesn't make sense to drive back and forth in your personal vehicle to tote around items. Rather, it makes more sense to rent a truck and throw everything in there for one trip. Budgeting is extremely important in any move that you make. If you are moving into a new apartment, make sure that you can afford the rent each month based on your current earnings. What if you were to lose your job? Would you have enough in savings to get you through for at least a couple of months while you search for a new job? Also keep in mind that utilities can fluctuate greatly depending on how much energy/water you use. Therefore, always make a conscious effort to keep costs down by turning off lights when they are not in use, taking shorter showers and keeping the thermostat at an even temperature. For instance, most people keep their thermostats around 65 degrees during the colder months to keep their apartments/homes temperate while avoiding having their pipes freeze. It will be worth it in the end, and your move will go that much more smoothly.
