Merits And Demerits Of Becoming A Video Game Tester

By: Sean Tan Home |

It has become a sort of a trend to think about becoming a video game tester today, particularly between the younger people who are already too much into gaming. The very idea of earning funds through doing nothing but playing games attracts them no end. But, does becoming a video game tester certainly mean doing nothing various than playing games? Sadly, it is not so. A game tester's job is a highly liable one just as some another, and it becomes over responsible for trillions of dollars are riding high on the gaming market general.

If you have a passion for gaming, then you can rest assured that nothing will excite you more than this profession. You will be getting a game CD each fortnight, which you have to install and play. There will be a review sheet with the game CD, and you will have to fill it out as you are playing the game. You will have to mention if there are some flaws in the game play or in the graphics, etc. of the game. You will also have to make a brief report of how you found the game. Some game companies would be interested to understand if you have some suggestions that could help to enhance the game.

The biggest fascination of becoming a video game tester is that you might not have to move out of the house much. Your game console is your office, and it is there that you will play games and earn your money from. If you love games, then there is no lifestyle that compares to this.

But then there are some pitfalls also. Nothing can be so picture perfect; there has to be some catch. And there are quite a few catches with being a game tester. For one, you are not playing for yourself, but you are testing out the game for commercial purposes. So, you will need to be very minute in your observations of the game. You cannot let anything miss, for that will spoil your credibility with the gaming company for coming projects.

Also, documenting the flaws is a tedious affair. You will want to be very descriptive and explain the visual defect in words, which is a case for someone who does not have the power of creative expression. You might need occasionally to play the same level at dissimilar resolutions to find out whether the case exists at all kinds of settings. If there are cut scenes with audio, you will requirement to be very observant to what they are saying (gamesters do not like listening much, I understand), and report problems with diction, lip sync or anything like that.

But the harrowing portion is having to pause the game repeatedly to report some drawbacks in it. This does reduce the thrill of the game. Even if they allow you to keep the CD when the game is done, you will have played the game so thoroughly well that you might not want to play it ever again. And you might have to actually go and give the companies your review in people sometimes. So much for the myth that video game testers get to be at home all the time!

But, in the last count, game testing is not a bad career at all. It does require professionalism and perfection, but then which job doesn't? If you have the needful skills and a passion for games, you must seriously consider taking up this excited profession.
