Metal Detectors: Fight Against Terrorism

By: Sylvan Newby Home | Recreation-and-Sports

Metal detectors are tools which are not as great merchandise as cell phones, notebooks, and laser alarms are. Nonetheless, these are really practical, as well as its benefits comprise both careless and essential apps.

There are different kinds of metal detectors too. Some could be used underwater, even. These could be used for searching for bombs that were dropped during the previous wars that tore the earth. Underwater metal detectors could also be used for some underwater treasure hunting. Legends like the Yamashita Treasure have encouraged some people to keep looking for gold that was lost way back in the 1940s, in World War II. But more than the pursuit of a possible myth, metal detectors actually have uses that could actually save human lives.

One of the crucial uses for metal detectors include being used in the food and pharmaceutical industry. Because these fields need the most stringent of quality assurance efforts that money can afford, the products have to be checked not only for consistency, but also for possible contamination. Should medicine or food be contaminated with metals, human deaths could actually result from lapses on the part of the food or drug company's Quality Assurance department.

These metals get into the food or the drugs being prepared when metal parts of the machinery used to process them break down. Metal detectors come in when the Quality Assurance technologists need to sift through the food or the drugs for these contaminants and make sure that the end product is free of contaminant metals. Should contaminants be discovered, then a product recall could be ordered, or the food or drug could be disposed before they even leave the warehouse.

Another crucial role of the metal detector lies in its use as a security device in airports. Thanks to the constant threat of terrorist forces after 9/11, there is now a need to be on the alert for possible terrorists and weapons that could be used in-flight. As such, the metal detector stands that we pass through in airports are the primary measures to check if we're carrying deadly weapons or possible explosives on our person. On the other hand, the X-Ray machine is there to check our luggage for possible weapons or explosives.

Metal detectors are also heavily used on the battlefield. War-torn nations like Iraq and Afghanistan, even the area between North and South Korea definitely need constant "weeding out" of mines. Metal detectors are the tools of choice for these tasks. Mines are weeded out so that innocent passersby would be spared from being casualties of war. These also serve to protect the other soldiers who could step onto a land mine at any time.

Metal detectors have versatile uses. While some people use metal detectors as toys for hobbies like Coin Shooting, Beach Combing or Treasure Hunting, as you can see, metal detectors also have life-saving uses.
