Mitsubishi's Forthcoming Compact Crossover To Compete With Nissan Qashqai And Vw Tiguan

By: Mary Pierce Home | Business

Mitsubishi is set to release a brand-new compact crossover that was first introduced at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show as the cX concept. This 4x4 softroader is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in February 2010 and exhibited to European markets at Geneva's motor show the following month. It is expected to be available for purchase in the UK as early as the summer of 2010.

This new hatchback-styled car will be built according to Mitsubishi's mid-size global platform, which also served as the foundation for the Lancer and Outlander, among other models. From the sketch of the vehicle that has so far been released it is clear that the new 4x4 will sport Mitsubishi's distinctive jet fighter styling on its front end as well as other aesthetic features of the cX concept. Reports suggest it will be available with a clean 2.0-litre petrol and extremely efficient 1.8-litre diesel engine, and that by 2013 a plug-in hybrid version could be on the market. Mitsubishi Australia, however, is said to have a choice of 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre new generation turbo diesel engines, both of which boast optimum efficiency.

Mitsubishi classifies its new baby crossover among its "environmental" cars such as the i-MiEV, Colt, Lancer, Grandis and Outlander. The car is also said to mark a crucial turning point in Mitsubishi's business plan to move away from the exclusive manufacturing of 4x4's to a new focus on environmentally-friendly crossover vehicles and passenger cars. When it comes to pricing, the company is expected to price the softroader significantly below much of the competition. The Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan are among its main rivals.

Ever since its launch the Qashqai, a new breed of compact crossover SUV, has burst through sales forecasts in all markets. Its robust and unique styling certainly has contributed to its success, as has its winning combination of excellent fuel economy and off-road capabilities. The Qashqai has received top safety ratings thanks to its ALL MODE 4x4 system, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and side and curtain airbags. Its 2.0-litre engine that delivers 20.5 kg-m/4,400 rpm of torque is paired with a six-speed manual Xtronic CVT transmission. This formidable opponent also offers a Bluetooth Hands Free Phone System, Xenon head lamps, a front fog lamp, an auto air-conditioning system with dual zone temperature control, and a host of other top features.

Volkswagen launched its compact 4x4 Tiguan in 2008, calling it the "GTI of SUVs". The Tiguan's engine is VW's 2.0-litre turbo inline-four, which is capable of generating 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft torque, and is coupled with either a manual or automatic six-speed transmission. The engine's so-called "high-performance turbocharging" maximises fuel economy and reduces emissions while maintaining adequate performance. The Tiguan is based on a Passat-like platform with some elements of the Rabbit and its maximum towing capacity comes to 2,200 lbs. A 60/40-split folding seat increases the crossover's interior space, and there is an extensive list of available features including a 6.5-inch touch screen navigation system, a panoramic sunroof and rear-view camera.
