Move Outside Your Comfort Zone To Become A Better Guitarist

By: Deane Alban Home | Recreation-and-Sports

One of the most frustrating aspects of playing guitar is hitting a wall. You're stuck and just not improving no matter how hard you try. Whether you are a newbie or a seasoned pro, anyone can face the same problem and wonder, "Why aren't I at the level I want and how do I get there?"

First, realize you don't need to be a musical genius to become a great guitarist but you do need to be passionate about music and be committed. Think about it, have you ever met a great guitarist who isn't passionate about music? Or met anyone who is great at anything who isn't passionate about it? So ask yourself if you still have passion about playing music. If not, that could be your problem right there.

Especially if you are stuck, learning something new is an excellent step to becoming a better guitarist. There's always a new skill to learn and master. Consider getting involved in some sort of lessons or get a guitar instructional DVD, something that will push you beyond where you are. Receiving motivation and encouragement from a teacher, even a virtual one, is always helpful. Push yourself to learn something outside your comfort zone to get the creative juices flowing.

The more genres of music you listen to, the better guitarist you will become. If you normally listen to rock, try a little jazz. If you normally play jazz, listen to a little country. Some of the most innovative musicians cross over from one style to another or combine genres successfully. Hearing something new may inspire you. You may even want to check online for some free guitar music lessons in a different genre just for fun.

Surround yourself with guitarists that are better than you. You'll never learn anything hanging with people less than you are. Find people that are patient and understanding. Eventually you will find yourself at their level. Don't know anyone else who plays or who plays better than you? You can "hang" with some of the best guitarist by buying a guitar instruction DVD or self taught guitar lessons that offer video instruction. There are some world class guitar instructors that teach this way. Having a world class virtual guitarist to jam with is next best thing.

Ask others what helped them. Get on guitar forums. There are some great, active ones out there. Networking allows you to give and receive, and lets your creative juices really starting to flow.

So if you are stuck in a rut break out of your comfort zone. Change your mindset, learn and listen to something new, hang with some new and better players, and soon you'll break through your guitar playing plateau.
