It's that time of year again. There's no getting away from the fact that looking good just has to go hand in hand with staying warm; rosy cheeks are OK up to a point, but thread veins and chilblains? No thank you. Don't get me wrong; the search for the perfect LBD for the party season is still paramount. But dresses do not 'a full winter wardrobe make'. Tops and coats are less of an issue this season. Cable knits have to be one of the best trends on a purely practical level. And, with supermarkets awash with cashmere it won't break the bank to buy the fluffiest jumper in six different colour ways. But oh, the feet... Is it really too much to ask that feet can be warm and cosy whilst still looking stylish? Before discovering the wondrous Mukluk boots it really did seem so. Boots are all well and good, but at this time of year most just don't cut it. Thin soles and tottery heels are simply no good when navigating fallen leaves and wet pavements. The walk from the front door to the car looms like an assault course on dark winter mornings, and each step from the bus stop to work incites fear of complete loss of poise and elegance. Uggs did fulfil the role for a while, but when generic copies crept everywhere from Claire's to Shoe Zone, it was clear that a good thing was coming to an end. After all, who wants to blend in with the sixteen year-olds hanging out with their alcopops in bus shelters everywhere up and down the land? And anyway, whilst Uggs were great with skinny jeans or short skirts for the weekend, they never did quite cut it for the office. Were we really ever fooled 'ugly' was cool? Seems rather like asking Jordan rather than Dita Von Teese for fashion tips. But in Mukluks all my prayers are answered. Finally, boots that are comfy, warm and chic. Kate Moss managed to get hold of a pair when there were only four in the county typical. Jennifer Aniston traded Brad in for her pair. But us mere mortals can now indulge too. Fur's been off the fashion menu for so long now that even seeing Ms Moss in a pair hit the 'Ewww' button. But dig a little further and these boots come up trumps for the eco conscious too. High fashion and ethics combine in the Mukluk because the fur used comes from fully sustainable sources, is never farmed, and goes to help First Nations organisations in Canada. Surely it's a more satisfying way to 'give' than buying someone a goat for Christmas? We're generally clueless about leather sources for footwear, so for once it's good to know. Now there's a pair of boots that can switch so effortlessly between outfits and tick both the 'practical' and 'ethical' boxes, there's no reason not to get my Mukluks in two different colours...
