Multiple Shared Hosting Accounts Vs Dedicated Server: Which Is Better?

By: dwsprasanna Home | Internet-and-Business | Web-Hosting

When you are starting up a website, one of the first things you'll need to do it pick a web hosting provider. There's no need to worry about this, because there are plenty of providers out there to choose from. What you should be thinking about is whether you want to go with a shared hosting account or a dedicated server. Each one has its ups and downs, so let's go over what each one can bring to the table.

Shared web hosting

Shared web hosting is the perfect choice for many people, probably the majority of start-up companies, because of one simple fact: it's cheap. You can usually expect to pay about $5 per month for a shared web hosting account, and sometimes you can find one for even less. These accounts offer sufficient storage space for most needs, providing usually around 100Mb of storage, although it's not uncommon to see up to 5Gb. Just like the storage, you'll be getting varied bandwidth amounts between providers. You can expect to see anywhere from 1Gb to 20Gb a month. You'll also typically get a free email address that is linked to your domain name. So what can dedicated servers offer you?

Dedicated Servers

A dedicated server has many distinct advantage, and one crippling disadvantage. For starters, with a dedicated server, you own the entire server. You have much more bandwidth and storage available to you, and you can even choose which operating system you want to use on the server. Often the choice of hardware is yours as well. It all sounds great, but this is where the disadvantage comes in; as with anything of superior quality, you're going to have to pay more for it. As much as $200 a month more.

To sum it up, if you are just starting out, a shared web hosting account is all you need. As you start to grow, that's when you may want to start thinking about a dedicated server.
