Nasal Congestion Treatment

By: altruist Home | Health-and-Fitness

Nasal congestion normally refers to a stuffy or blocked nose. Sometimes we may find both our nostrils are completely blocked. As a result, we have no choice but to breathe through our mouth. In fact, nasal congestion occurs when the mucosa within the nose becomes swollen. Another reason could be that the inferior nasal turbinates are exceptionally large.

Causes of Nasal Congestion

-Hay fever and other allergies

-Influenza

-Sinus infection or sinusitis

-Overuse some nasal sprays

Allergies invariably also cause clogged nasal passages symptoms by releasing chemicals in the body that cause tissue swelling surrounding the turbinates.

Try to keep your head elevated while you sleep to reduce mucus buildup.

The consumption of hot liquids is another classic and effective home remedy for nasal congestion. Hot tea or hot apple cider is a good choice. Hot soups are a traditional home remedy for nasal congestion, colds and flu. There really is something to the old jokes about "Jewish penicillin:" the consumption of hot liquids can cause your nose to run, flushing out congestion and irritation. Spicy liquids, including spicy soups like Chinese Hot and Sour soup, can be even more effective.

For relieving nasal congestion, also consider using a device called a neti pot. This device originated in India and is used for nasal irrigation. It looks for all the world like a small teapot with an extra long, thin spout. The spout is designed to go up into your nostril. The pot itself is filled with warm water which is then gently poured into the nose to loosen the mucus.

Whether the cause of congestion stems from the common cold virus, or is caused by airborne particles in the air, the best way to reduce the congestion that results is to reduce the viruses and airborne particulates that cause them.

Viruses are often much smaller than .3 microns so it may seem that a purifier with a HEPA filter would not be effective. The good news is that viruses tend to attach to larger pollutants in order to travel from one host to another, and so by removing the bigger particles, you are also removing the viruses and well.

One natural treatment that you can try on your own is a nasal massage. You can accomplish this by taking the tip of your finger and place it on the end of your nose, and then firmly slide your finger up the bridge of the nose all the way to your hair. This should be repeated anywhere from 5 to 10 times. This method actually helps relieve pressure by lifting up the nasal passage and this in turn loosens up the mucous.

This condition can be treated with antibiotic medications and by using intranasal corticosteroids, however sometimes surgery is needed. However these treatments can all have side effects and are quite costly. On the other hand natural, home nasal congestion remedies are quick, effective and inexpensive while producing lasting effects as well.

Care should also be taken to wash your hands regularly as it will prevent the spread of cold germs. Using vitamin C supplements is also seen to reduce the duration of the cold. A common cold can occur three to four times a year and school children can have it as much as six to ten times a year. While a cold normally gets cured by itself, if you see a persistence of symptoms then you should consult a health care professional. Medications that dry up the nasal passages should not be frequently used except under medical supervision.

Drink Hot Liquids This is one of the best ways for you to unclog your sinuses is by drinking hot tea either black, green, herbal or decaffeinated (it really does not matter which one you drink). Or you could have hot chicken soup throughout the day instead. But it is important that you drink enough to ensure that your urine is light in colour.

Medicinal treatments includes the use of assorted substances to abate the bulk of nasal discharge, even though, one of the most used treatments is Saline Nasal Sprays that however, could not be used for a long period of time since can cause you other types of problems like advanced types of Rhinitis.
