Navigate Furniture Stores The Knowledgeable Way

By: Jacob T Miller Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Improvement

Furniture stores carry a wide variety of furniture within their inventories. When shopping for new pieces, always bear in mind the three main divisions or categories then subdivide according to preference.

Application

When you enter furniture stores, you generally know what function you want the furniture to serve, its application. You want a stable surface for placing items either temporarily, such as a table, or more permanently, such as a bookcase or credenza.

Couches, chairs, and beds qualify as surface furniture as well, because the surfaces are what will be utilized. However, buying a couch to serve as a resting place for plates, glasses, and food would seem counterproductive when preferring longevity and durability.

Material

The second major category of furniture comprises materials. Wood, plastic or acrylic, metal or chrome, cloth and leather are common materials for furniture of any age or style.

Coordinating materials within the available selections in furniture stores can be either easy or difficult, depending on tone, shade, lighting, desired feel or environment of a room, and cost. Having a solid idea of the effect you wish to create facilitates quality furniture selection.

Type

Reviewing furniture by type is the most common method by which people shop. Bedroom sets, living room sets, and dining sets, for example, are the initial category you identify. Because of that, most furniture stores design their showrooms by type.

You will normally find all the available dining room tables, chairs, and hutches, for example, in one area while the mattresses, dressers, chests of drawers, night stands, headboards and foot boards are in another. Dining room furniture often claims independent space as well.

Now What?

Once you know the type of furniture, its desired function or application, and the material that best fits your needs and your budget, now additional considerations come to the fore:

Length: Ensure the sofa you've picked will fit where you want it. Don't be afraid to pull out a tape measure and double check. Any store employee who attends you will probably help, because they often get paid by commission, and they'd rather you'd keep the piece than bring it back for size issues.

Bulk: If that sofa will fit exactly where you want it, picture the furniture placed in your mind's eye to ensure the overall dimensions create the desired effect. Is it too overpowering for the area? Will it crowd out other pieces or will it blend and complement the rest of the room?

Texture: Is the material of the right texture you want? Leather not only physically feels far different than twill, it projects a vastly different effect in a room.

Additional Considerations

Do you want a traditional look, borrow from the Industrial look, or perhaps, a transitional look? Knowing the furniture style you like aids choice selection of not only the furniture but also the retailer. Heading to a store that specializes in traditional furniture may have a few starkly profiled Industrial pieces, but if Industrial was the look you wanted, spending time there could well just add frustration. Find a furniture retailer that knows the look you want and stocks acceptable selections within that look.

Color plays a huge role in furniture selection. If you find the otherwise perfect chest of drawers, but it isn't available in the wood grain color that you need, you sigh heavily and walk away with the frustration level building even higher. The couch that's the wrong color of green can ruin an otherwise perfectly decorated living room.

Assorted extra aspects can influence from which retailer you buy your furniture:

Stain protection: Are the cloth-based materials already treated for stain and water resistance? How difficult it is to apply it yourself?

Delivery: Is it available? Is there a charge? Is there a day or time restriction? Is setting up the new furniture included? Can the delivery people remove old furniture? Does it cost?

Assembly: Does the furniture come fully assembled already or will you be spending hours on hands and knees trying to put it together without losing nuts, bolts, screws, and your sanity? Do you mind putting it together yourself?
