Ncaa College Football: History Of The Iowa Hawkeyes

By: Jayden Townsend Home | Recreation-and-Sports | Football

The Iowa Hawkeyes are a college football team that plays in the NCAA Division 1 level. The team plays in one of the top conferences in all of college football. They play in the Big 10, which has many of the top teams in the nation each year. This has created a lot of competition for the Hawkeyes over the years, but they have fared fairly well.

The team has managed to win a total of 581 games in their history. Meanwhile they have lost 512 games this semester. Those numbers go along with 39 ties. These stats combine to give the team an all time winning percentage of .530.

Those winning tradition have led them to 24 postseason bowl games. These bowl games put the better teams in all of football up against each other. Despite playing against some of the best competition in the nation the Hawkeyes still managed to win 13 of their 24 games. They have lost 10 and tied one other of the remaining games. This represents a solid winning percentage and shows that they can play against many of the best teams in the nation.

The team is currently coached by Kirk Ferentz. Ferentz has been a very excellent coach for the team and has led them to a better record than they had seen in their franchise history prior to his tenure. Since joining the team 12 years ago he has managed to lead the team to a record of 82-55.

In the history of the university they have managed to win 12 conference titles. These 12 wonderful seasons include a season that they managed to achieve ultimate success by winning the National Championship.

The National Championship for the team came in the year 1958. In this season the team was coached by Forest Evashevski. The team finished the season as the 2nd rated team in the nation behind LSU. LSU had been experiencing a magical season in 1958 and had a record of 11 wins and 0 losses after the end of the season. Iowa went on to play in the Rose Bowl and won in dominant fashion. In their game they managed to win with a record of 38-12. During this game they managed to set or tie multiple Rose Bowl records. Although they were not consensus national champions that season they did manage to receive the award from the Football Writers Association of America.

Although we do not recognize them as being quite so prestigious today, they were one of the most highly regarded organizations in awarding national championships at the time. With that the team managed to win the Grantland Rice Award, which was the trophy given by the Football Writers Association of America.

The team continues to be a solid force in the NCAA. Although they are not a perennial contender for the championship, they are a team that can be a secondary pick to make a major bowl game and may even compete for championships every few years.
