Monday Night Football will be a great chance for the Dallas Cowboys to wake up from this terrible early season with a win against the leaders of their division: the NY Giants. Finding themselves on the bottom of the NFC East standings, having accumulated only one victory after five games, and still winless at home, the Dallas Cowboys’ future doesn’t seem promissory, especially when their next visitor is none other than the NY Giants, leaders of their division. Despite having the highest payroll in the league, their strong investment hasn’t been translated into results, and the game against the Giants might be their last wake up call if they want to mantain their playoff chances alive. The antithesis of the Cowboys, NY Giants, have confirmed that they have overcome their irregular early season -where they had a losing strike of the two games after Week 3- with three victories in a row. On Monday Night Football they will not only go after their 4 straight win, but also after their first division win. After six games, this will be the first division opponent that they will face, and that time couldn’t be better for the Giants, as their confidence is to the top motivated by their winning strike. With 10 games to go before the playoffs, the Giants will be playing six of them against their division â€Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington- opponents, and a win against Dallas would leave the Cowboys in the precarious situation that a 1-5 record represents. This would practically turn the NFC East into a matter of three. Despite the good moment that the Giants are going through, the last win against the Detroit Lions wasn’t very promissory if you keep in mind that they played a team that was 1-4 before that game. The 28-20 win lacked of the killer instinct necessary to make a statement as a serious contender for the title. It is true that winning by all means is always going to be welcomed, but it is how you win that really dictates your chances to aspire for bigger things. If the Giants have really learned something from this win against the Lions, it should be reflected in the score against the Cowboys, a team that is in the exact position that the Lions where when they played them. If the Cowboys want to win Monday’s game, they will need to urgently improve two aspects in specific that have been killing them: interceptions and celebrations. Despite averaging 313.2 passing yards and 3 TD in the last two games after Bye Week, Tony Romo has also suffered a total of 5 interceptions -3 against Tennessee Titans and 2 versus Minnesota Vikings- in those two games, which have enormously affected the results. Last game against the Vikings is a great example of the high price that the Cowboys had to pay for those interceptions, as two of them led to 10 points from the Vikings, in the 24-21 loss. Celebrations are also costing games, as they have suffered their second penalty in two weeks for this. The first one â€Marc Colombo felt down from a chest bump with Jason Witten- against the Titans cost them 15 yard in the final five minutes, just when the game â€that they ended up losing 37-27- was tied. Then against the Vikings it was Sam Hurd’s â€hook’em horns†salutation to Roy Williams that cost them the 15 yard penalty. Cowboys need to keep in mind that celebrations must be â€after the game, winning the gameâ€, as head coach Wade Phillips said.
