Nfl: History Of The Cleveland Browns

By: Casey Haney Home | Recreation-and-Sports | Football

The Cleveland Browns are a football team based out of Cleveland, Ohio that take part in the National Football League. The Browns are in the North Division and have existed for more than 60 years.

The team began playing in the All-America Football Conference in 1946. They were members of that league for 4 years before joining the National Football league in 1950. During their time in the â€AAFC†the team found tremendous success. They were league champions four times in their stay, including a 15-0 undefeated season in 1948. The Browns truly were the most dominant team that the AAFC ever saw during the existence of the league.

Early on in their time in the NFL the Browns found tremendous success. The Browns won those four AAFC titles and then joined in the NFL and won some more league championships. Prior to the merger of the AFL the team won four more championships. These championships came mostly in the 1950’s. In 1950 they won their first NFL Championship in just their first year as members of the NFL. This success would only continue throughout the decade.

In 1954 the team won their second title in the NFL, but it would only be the front end of a back-to-back championship that would take place. Those three championships only tell part of the story of the Browns in the 1950s. The Browns went on to make the playoffs 8 times in the 1950s. This was an amazing start to the new franchise.

The winning tradition continued into the 60’s. The Browns made the playoffs 5 more times in the 1960’s, including another league championship in 1964. Unfortunately for the Browns this would be the last league championship that they would collect in the history of their franchise.

Much of the success of the 50’s and 60’s can be attributed to Jim Brown. Jim Brown was a fullback that quickly became one of the best players to ever play the game. His career was rather short, spanning from 1957-1965 but he left his mark during that time. Although we see a lot of great running backs today, the league was different back then. Brown would rush for 1000 yards in 7 of his 9 seasons, but in those seasons there were years where the 2nd best rusher was nearly at half of his total rushing yards. He truly was a man among boys in his time in the NFL. He is one of the first players that people think of when they think of the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns success took a hit as they entered into the 70’s. The team only managed to make two playoff appearances in the decade and it looked as if their tale of fame and fortune was over. The 1980’s fortunately brought a rejuvenation of hope for the franchise.

During the 80’s things really turned around for the Browns. After missing the playoffs for 8 consecutive years the Browns managed to bounce back and return to form in 1980. They went on to make the playoffs 8 times in the 80’s, but that would not be enough to stop what would happen in the 90s.

Fortunes started to turn for the Browns and there were talks of relocating the team. The Browns made some plans and deals and instead suspended the team’s play for 3 years. The NFL made a new franchise in Baltimore and allowed the Browns to have some time to regroup. They did make a return and have seen a little bit of success in the new decade, but have not found consistency.

The team made the playoffs in 2002 but has failed to return since. The team has seen many coaches and quarterbacks but has not been able to turn it around. Time will tell if the Browns ever return back to glory.
