Niacin Facts

By: altruist Home | Health-and-Fitness | Alternative-Medicine

Niacin deficiency, which is the major cause of pellagra, will generally only happen in undeveloped countries but it has occurred in the United States, and in severe cases, may still result in death. This deficiency will involve what is referred to as the three D's; Dermatitis, which is a localized and pigmented skin rash, Diarrhea, and Cognitive Dementia, which is memory loss.

Even today, the importance of vitamin B is cultivating new roles in the world of beauty. Dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD forecasts topical vitamin B and its multiple derivatives as key ingredients in future anti-aging products. For example, one derivative of the B vitamin niacin, nicotinamide, has been shown to improve the ability of the epidermis, the upper-most layer of the skin, to retain moisture.

B3 is found in meat, meat organs, poultry, fish, yeast, legumes, dairy products, eggs and whole grains. A serious lack of this vitamin causes significant damage in our tissues. Pellagra is the characteristic disease caused by a lack of B3.

A deficiency in niacin can lead to pellagra, which has a number of manifestations. An inflamed tongue and irritated gastric track and colon as well as depression and hard rough skin are just some of the symptoms of this deficiency disease.

Benefits of Niacin (Vitamin B-3)

Niacin is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fat and the generation of energy from foods.

Niacin is needed in the formation of red blood cells and some hormones, and in the metabolism of some drugs and toxicants.

Niacin is also required in the production of hydrochloric acid.

Niacin supports normal central nervous system function and is important to the health of the skin and helps maintain normal digestive tract function.

Nowadays, artificial vitamins are added to almost every processed food - not because they are so good for you, but because foods that are "enriched" sell better. Cereals, bread, milk, yoghurt, boiled sweets, even dog food with added vitamins leave the supermarket shelves much faster than do those without them. Smokers, meat eaters, sugar addicts, or people who drink too much alcohol can now continue enjoying their self-destructing habits without having to fear the dreaded vitamin deficiency, thanks to the blessed food industry.

IT HELPS PREVENT HEART DISEASE:- Vitamin B3 lowers blood levels of triglycerides and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. It also increases blood levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Whilst triglycerides and LDL cholesterol are not bad in themselves increased blood levels of these two fats often increases your heart disease risk.

NOT GETTING ENOUGH CAN CAUSE PELLAGRA:- Not getting enough of this vital vitamin can ultimately lead to a condition called pellagra. This is a disease which makes your skin red and rough. It can also make you feel weak and reduces your appetite significantly.

This holistic functioning of the body is also reflected in the dietary requirements for the successful production of the enzymes. As well as a good supply of first-class protein, ie that containing each of the essential amino acids, a wide variety of vitamins and minerals are required to allow optimal levels of enzyme manufacture.
