No Sound? How To Restore Sound Back To Your Pc

By: Luesin Home | Computers-and-Technology | Software

Do you have a sound card and yet your computer has no sound? Maybe, you have even gotten an error message saying your computer doesn't have a sound card. If you have Windows 7, Vista, XP or even Windows 2000, you can do a few things to get your sound back and start hearing things again.

D'oh! Check to See if the Sound is Muted
Before you go too far, it is always a good idea to check the obvious things. Even the most knowledgeable computer expert can overlook the simple and spend hours finding out they forgot to plug something in, which caused the computer to have no sound.

†Is your sound muted?
- Look down by the clock; you will see an icon that is your volume. Hover your mouse over each icon until you find it. When you hover, it should say "Volume." If it says, "Volume Muted", then you need to double click the icon and uncheck any muted boxes.
†Are your speakers plugged in?
- If you have external speakers (speakers you can move around), then make sure they are plugged into the computer.

- In most cases, the plug is color coded to match your computer. So if the plug is green, plug it in the green spot.

- If the speakers plug into a USB port, plug them in or try a different port.
- Some speakers required external power. Check the back of the speakers to see if they have a place for a power cord. If so, then plug it into the wall.

Check for Windows Compatibility
If you have done the first section, then it is possible the speakers are not compatible with your computer. Therefore, you need to check for compatibility with Windows and your computer.
†If the speakers worked in the past, there is no need to check for compatibility.
†If you still have the speaker box, then check the box for the Windows logo.
- If it does not have the Windows logo, exchange the speakers for ones that do.
- If it does have the Windows logo, check to see which version of Windows it uses. Not all speakers will work with all versions of Windows.

Check for Updates
If everything else has not worked, it is time to start checking for updates. Many times, this can be the cause of no sound.
†Windows Update
- Go to the Microsoft Windows Update site and check for any needed updates. You will need to check using Internet Explorer for this to work.
†Driver Updates
- If you know the manufacturer of the speakers, then go to that site and check for driver updates for your speakers.
- If you do not know the manufacturer, then you will need to use driver update software to find and install missing drivers.

Driver update software can check your entire system for needed updates. In two minutes, it can find updates for your speakers, USB ports, sound card and completely restore sound to your computer.
