Northern Lights Spectacular

By: Michelle Blackmore Home | Travel-and-Leisure

Arguably one of the most stunning natural wonders of the world, the Northern Lights, or the Aurora Borealis, are best seen from November until the end of February when the arctic and sub-arctic regions are at their darkest.

So if you are wondering how and where to spend the last of your annual leave, for example if it runs from April to April, or your annual leave has just started and you’ve always wanted to go, then best you book now!

The best countries to see the Northern Lights, countries that specialise in Northern Lights viewings are Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden. As previously mentioned, the best place to witness the Lights is somewhere free from light, so if you do combine your trip with a city break you will find that many cities and towns will run excursions to remote parts of their region to see them.

Whilst you can actually see the lights from September until the end of March, it’s now that they are considered the best. And of course under a clear sky with no artificial light, so try to steer clear of a city for example, ideally you need to be somewhere more remote. That said, you can see the Northern Lights from the Icelandic city of Reykjavik, which does mean you have the added advantage of combining your Lights trip with a city break to this stunning city.

Do bear in mind though, the Northern Lights are a natural pheomoninum, and as such are unpredictable. The amount of time you are able to view the display will always differ, as will the intensity of the display †some spectators are lucky enough to witness the lights for up to an hour, others just a few minutes. That said, if you are lucky enough to see them, even for a short amount of time, the sheer emotion provoked from the waves of green, yellow, pink and blues will leave every spectator speechless. The Northern Lights are a wonder, and an honour to witness.

Whilst previously mentioned, the best time to see the Northern Lights is considered to be from November until February, however they are visible from as early as September through to March. However be warned, if you do go this early or late in the season it is likely, if you see the Lights at all, that it will only be for a short amount of time.
