There are many reasons why fashions are an integral part of our daily office lives. Looking back to the mid nineties, the clues are there, when offices segregated secretaries from directors clearly by the clothing styles worn. Imagining there was a lot more interest in men’s sweaters. One area of fashion which has evolved in recent times is men’s fashions. People are more conscious, in the workplace of what styles they are wearing. Traditionally, the reasons why men and women dress formally for the office, was to display a unity, which I would effect the output in an office environment. Now, with so much more fashion choices at our fingertips, men and women will dress down more for work, with dress down Fridays. This is a by product of many years of top quality designers suggesting that men should be every bit as fashionable as women. Naturally men would opt for a more comfortable look. In most offices, men would stay dressed in their formal suits with some more ties and checked shirts reserved for the weekend attire. People were made aware of their lack of fashion sense through social situations It appears that styles exhibited around the offices, are more reflective of the environment in which people work. The time when office fashions and styles first changed, was back in the early 1950’s when more men wore to work their skinny ties and double breasted suits, and it was also a time when social elegance reflected in the clothes on your back. Men could portray their lifestyle choices through a preppy style, bright coloured sweaters, v neck and crew neck sweaters and of course, this would send off the right vibes in a social situation. This would have been a difficult period for women, who took longer to break the shackles and restraints that society would have inflicted on them. It was a pivotal period though for office trends though, as more colour emerged. The typical office styles would see a man wearing a striped shirt, mens blazer, either checked or tartan, and some buffed up brogue shoes. Which makes more sense, choosing to live out a world where office fashions are plain and boring or where men and women have the ultimate say on their attire. The tendency for contemporary man to dress smarter and fashionably has allowed fashion designers to provide more choices. And importantly has given rise to the re-emergence of preppy fashions. I still see women conforming more than men, giving that the workplace continues to be a quite regimented place. It is incredible how office fashions are reflective of the times we live in.
