The largest city and capital of Greece is Athens it is located in the Attica in Southern Greece. It was named after the goddess Athena and is one of the oldest cities in the world with a history of about 3000 years. Athens hosted the first modern day Olympic Games in 1896 and in 2004 hosted the Summer Olympics. Athens also has a vast number of music venues including a state of the art music hall known as the Megaron Moussikis. It is home to 148 theatrical stages more than any other city in Europe and features many romantic, open air garden cinemas. There are giant indoor outdoor discos and clubs where the most famous Greek singers perform nightly to packed houses. In the winter Athens club scene comes alive with shows range from blues rock jazz to traditional Rembetika, laika. The most happening area of town is Psirri, with its trendy bars and restaurants. The lesbian and gay scene in Athens is fairly low key. Athens busiest shopping street is the pedestrian only Ermou. Kolonaki, is where the designer boutiques such as the Italian Versace and the newest Greek talent Eleftheriades rub shoulders with coffee shops and chic restaurants. This has the area Tsakalof, one of the most expensive streets in the world. Haggling is standard practice in the tourist areas of Athens and is essential in order to avoid paying extortionate prices. Acropolis is a religious complex which consists of several temples which were built during the 5th century BC. The Parthenon is a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. The Parthenon became the paragon of classical Greek architecture. A small museum features an outstanding collection of ancient Greek sculptures. You can walk the Lykavittos Hill or you can take cable car. There is such beautiful scenery from the top and it is one of the highest points in Athens. The name of the hill means hill of the wolves. The legend says during the ancient times, wolves roamed freely on the hill. You can visit the 19th century chapel of St George, built on the same location of the Byzantine church of Prophet Ilias. The Agora was Athenss civic and commercial centre. People used these buildings for a wide range of educational, theatrical political, philosophical, and athletic purposes. This is a nice place to wander, enjoy the views up toward the Acropolis, and take in the herb garden and flowers planted around the 5th century B.C.
