Any specialist field requires specialist knowledge and sometimes specialist infrastructure. That"s true in accountancy and payroll services, true in courier package delivery, and true in hardware repairs. Few medium sized or even large companies would aim to have staff on hand with the right skills to fix a laser printer when a part breaks, and they certainly wouldn"t try to deliver their own mail. It"s much cheaper to get a specialist company on board to provide services that may be absolutely necessary but do not lie within a business" area of expertise. In the case of mail delivery it"s just not possible to do in house, and in the case of accountancy, the level of expert know-how required to do the right tasks at the right time (and do them in an efficient and cost effective manner) is very high. And yet, many companies still try to administer their own network security instead of buying in network services, even though they employ no staff specifically for this purpose. The staff they have will have other matters to deal with from day to day, and they are highly unlikely to have expert skills and qualifications in network security. Most IT departments will have the in-house ability to set up a basic firewall, but that is only one facet of modern network security. Even a really good firewall may not deter malicious intruders, and that"s still true when it"s optimally set up and administered properly. These days DDoS (Domain Denial of Service) attacks should be a concern for any moderate to large company, and a firewall certainly won"t help there. DDoS campaigns can cost huge amounts of money, but for a specialist they are easy to detect before that revenue starts draining away. There is a lot more to network security. All companies should consider getting an audit at the very least.
