Palliative Care Of Esophageal Cancer

By: Ian Eallard Home | Cancer

According to WHO or world health organization, palliative care of esophageal cancer can be defined as the complete, active care of persons who are suffering from diseases which are non responsive to any curative treatments. Hospice care of esophageal cancer is a term used interchangeably with the term palliative care of esophageal cancer. The main objective of palliative care of esophageal cancer is to ensure that the family of the patient and the patient achieve best quality of life possible.

Palliative chemotherapy is one of the palliative cares of esophageal cancer which is administered for controlling symptoms related to cancer and for prolonging the survival rates of the patients and for enabling best possible life quality through antitumor therapy use. Most of the adults are found to be very responsive to this therapy that their symptoms are improved. The improvement in the symptoms can be correlated with the tumor response to chemotherapy. For instance, a combined treatment using cisplatin with irinotecan hydrochloride for esophageal cancer showed nearly fifty percent response rate along with improvement in the condition called dysphagia. Recent studies show the fact that chemotherapy enhances symptoms related to cancer and enhances the survival rate of esophageal cancer patients.

Chemotherapy offer good results by opening the esophagus of the patients so that t hey swallow food in a better way and in turn maintain better weight. Esophagus might also be opened in various mechanical methods like ablation and stents. Surgical palliative care includes putting feeding jejunostomy. Since poor feeding decreases the strength to fight against the disease, palliative care concentrates on improving the nutrition level of the patients.

The ideal persons for receiving palliative care or hospice care of esophageal cancer would be the ones who have less then eight months of life expectancy. They can receive palliate care at a health care centre or in their homes. Patients need to get the needed comfort, dignity and peace during the care. The health care team normally consists of a nurse, physician, chaplain (clergy member, priest or pastor), certified nursing assistance and social worker for supporting the caregiver, family and ultimately the patient.

Many are of the view that palliative care of esophageal cancer is the step of giving up hopes but it is not so in reality as the patient, care taker and the patient’s family get physical and emotional support when they are needed the most. The quality of service offered to them makes the life more enjoyable and comfortable till their demise.
