By: Clint Jhonson Home | Food-and-Drink

Pecan is a variety of nut like almond, hazel nut, walnut, etc. Pecan trees are mostly found in North America. These nuts are rich in fat, carbohydrate, and protein. Pecans have a high nutritional value and work as antioxidant to keep you safe from a number of diseases. These nuts are enclosed in their shells. As edible nuts they are tasty and can be used in various ways like roasted pecans or praline pecan for snacks or the traditional way to make pecan pies.

Pecans as nuts have long shelf life. Certain stores offer great quality of pecans which are plump and fresh and are of similar size and color. If shelled pecans are kept in the refrigerator they last for at least nine months. If these are frozen they will last for even two years. If you have unshelled pecans, they can last in a cool dry place for almost one year.

Pecan pie is one of the most delicious pecan dishes. It is said that the idea of pecan pie was introduced by French for the first time in US. It is a dessert baked and served in holidays and special occasions like Thanksgiving and Valentines Day. The traditional pecan pie is made of corn syrup and pecan nuts filling in a crust. There are quite a few pecan pies recipes are available and all of them are extremely popular.

The crust for the pie is prepared with flour, butter, sugar, and little salt, just to taste. Adding spoonful of water a smooth dough is prepared. It is chilled in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. The dough is rolled out on a floured flat surface and transferred into a pie dish. Texan pecan pie is one of the richer varieties of pie that is served as a dessert. For this the filling is made of chocolate and butter. Blended egg, salt, brown sugar, and corn syrup are added to it to make it taste wonderful. Chopped or whole pecans are sprinkled over the unbaked dough and the mixture is poured over it. It is baked in a preheated oven for about 55 minutes till the crust turns golden. A tasty pecan pie loaded with pecan is ready.

Another popular pie with pecan is deep-dish pecan pie. The 9-inch deep pie crust can be either bought or can be prepared at home. The filling can be made with flour, sugar, egg, salt, and Karo syrup blended together. The crust is lined with nice big pecans. The mixture is poured over them and baked in preheated oven. A similar type of pecan pie can be made with chocolate chip. Here too the crust is 9-inch deep. The filling is made of sugar, eggs, flour, butter, vanilla, and chocolate chips. The mixture is poured over pecan nuts lining the crust and baked. Again one can use the same piecrust for chocolate fudge pecan pie. The filling is prepared with chocolate, margarine, eggs, salt, and vanilla. The whole mixture is poured over the pecans filling the piecrust and baked.
