Periodontitis Disease Needs Immediate Treatment

By: Tony Tidswells Home | Health-and-Fitness | Dental

Teeth are supported and surrounded by tissues. Mouth is a well developed breeding ground for bacteria and thereby infection.

Gums are also great breeding grounds for harmful bacteria. Problem arises when gums are attacked by harmful bacteria, resulting in severe infection. This type of infection is termed as Periodontitis. It is actually, inflation of gums. When neglected, Periodontitis may lead to Gingivitis, a much severe gum disease.

Gum diseases start when teeth are not cleaned properly after every meal. This leads to formation of yellow covering on a tooth that hardens into tartar in due course of time. Tartar can be cleaned only under strict medical supervision.

Periodontal disease is related to infection of tissues and bones surrounding the tooth. If left untreated, then it results in loss of tooth, due to loosening of tooth inside the surrounding infected tissues.

Initial Periodontitis is low grade in infection where good quality tooth brush with regular cleaning will also not provide necessary relief. The amount of tartar formed around the tooth is much more then desired level. The bacteria in calulus start producing toxins and harmful sulphur compounds to destroy bone structure and subsequently gums around the tooth. Sulphur compounds also produce bad breath inside the mouth. Periodontal pocket bacteria make a reservoir in this pocket (space between tooth and gums) causing further infections.

When the space between tooth and gums reaches up to a depth of 5mm, this is termed as Modest Periodontitis Disease.

The next worst stage is Extreme Periodontitis where pockets between gums and tooth get further deep to reach 6mm depth. In this case, the only treatment is surgery.

Surgical treatment means removal of infected or diseased tissues. Dentists clean the structure thoroughly, so that it is no longer a breeding ground for plaque or tartar.

In extreme Periodontitis, bone structure is also infected, and then bone grafting is only solution. Untreated tooth will lead to loss of tooth due to destruction of supporting bone. The process is very gradual but created deep impact in mouth. Therefore it needs immediate attention.

Precaution is better than cure. Therefore take proper care of your teeth to prevent Periodontitis Disease.
