Laser hair removal is becoming one of the most popular hair removal methods and now makes up a $300 million industry within Australia. Most people are drawn to this hair removal method thanks to promises of permanent hair removal results and never having to shave, wax or pluck again. But, what most clinics or salons don’t tell you is that not all clients experience permanent hair removal. In fact, the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Association) does not allow clinics or salons to claim permanent results. Laser hair removal clinics or salons are only allowed, by law to state that they offer permanent hair reduction. So if you see a laser hair removal provider advertising permanent hair removal, this is not true and this is not a reputable organization. Laser hair removal works using a process known as selective photothermolysis which means that pin point lasers target colour or melanin in the hair follicle. The energy from the laser coverts into heat, causing the selective destruction of each hair bulb. As laser hair removal targets colour in the follicle, red and grey hairs are not suitable for treatment. The best results are achieved with dark hair on pale skin. People will see results following their first laser hair removal treatment. Hair will continue to grow for about a week and then once the dead hair follicle reaches the skin, hair will begin to fallout when encouraged by exfoliation. New growth may be seen about 3-4 weeks following laser hair removal; however hair will grow back sparser and finer. To achieve permanent hair reduction, 8-10 sessions are required depending on hair type and colour. After each treatment, the hair will grow back much finer, until minimal or no hair can be seen. Maintenance treatments to target any small amounts of new hair growth may be required following laser hair removal. This will involve sporadic treatments when hairs appear. There may be years between treatments after your initial course of laser hair removal. Results differ a great deal between individuals and depend on the coarseness and colour of the hair. People will experience differing levels of hair reduction. Some women will experience new hormonal hair growth post a full laser hair removal treatment. Hormonal hair growth is caused by a shift in a woman’s hormone levels at times such as pregnancy menopause or for suffers of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. At these times new hairs are grown †these are not regrowth of old hairs previously removed by laser hair removal. Women removing facial hair will also never experience permanent hair removal. As the hair found on a woman’s face is hormonally grown hair. In addition to hormonal growth, people may also find that lighter, finer hairs still remain following laser hair removal. These hairs are baby hairs, the light colour and fineness means the laser cannot target these hairs. To prevent confusion, it’s best to say that laser hair removal can only target hairs developed post puberty.
