Permanently Erasing Files From An Old Hard Drive

By: Pavan sharma Home | Computers-and-Technology | Data Recovery

Just like any other mechanical device in this world, computer systems also get obsolete after a few years. And in most situations, the computer users either buy a new computer system or upgrade their hardware components, such as hard disks. The new hard disks save more data in comparison to the old disk. But, the old hard disks also contain your years of critical data. In such situations, if you want to get rid of the old hard drive(s), you should always erase all the data stored in them. To do so, you should use an effective third-party Data Eraser Software that can permanently erase all your files from your hard drive.

Consider a practical case, where you are an owner of a small Accountancy firm that has around fifteen computer systems. Since, the hard drives of all the computers are almost filled, you decide to buy new hard drives (having triple the storage capacity) and paste the data within them. However, after you have done so, you format the old hard drives to re-sell them at a lower cost. But, the question here arises, is the formatting process enough to erase the data from old hard drives?

The answer to the above question is 'No'. Formatting the hard drive only deletes the entries of file systems. The data saved in the hard drive, however, remains intact. The formatted data can be easily recovered using an advanced data recovery software. So, if you want to re-sell your hard drive and do not want your client accounts information to be used by the purchaser, then you need to search for a Hard drive wipesoftware.

A drive wipe application can be easily downloaded from the Internet and be used by a user who has no prior data wipe experience. The Hard Drive Wipe application overwrites all the digital data with 0's and 1's and erases the files beyond any possibility of recovery. The advanced wiping algorithms used by the software perform up to 35 passes on the selected hard drive, so that no data recovery software is able to recover it.

Stellar Disk Wipe is one such Data Eraser Software that permanently erases all the files from almost all kinds of hard drives. Compatible with both Windows (Vista, XP, 2003, and 2000) and Mac OS X (10.4 and 10.5), the software is easy-to-understand due to its highly graphical user-interface.
