Picking The Right Types Of Toys For Your Puppy

By: Home |

Picking the right kind of toys for your puppy gets your puppy relationship off to a good start. Puppies need to chew, and you want them to chew on appropriate items, not your furniture or clothing. Remember that a puppy is a baby, and safety is also an issue to consider.

When you first bring the puppy into the home, it is important to puppy-proof the areas where the puppy may be left alone. For this reason, it is good to also crate train your puppy when very young, as it will come in handy when they are bigger from time to time. The crate is not a place for punishment, it is safety and protection. You can put a toy in the crate to help with boredom.

Picking the right kind of toys for your puppy is important. Toys eliminate boredom, help with training (as in retrievers), are fun and help bonding with the owner. After you have puppy-proofed the room by taking up loose carpet, securing loose wiring, and putting away heavy things that might fall on the puppy, look around for attractions that you don't want them to play with and put these items away.

It is best not to use old socks or shoes or other clothing for play time, because the puppy will not be able to discern between those and your new ones. Select puppy toys that are made for puppies. While they are small, use puppy toys, not dog toys. Give them only a few toys. If they are given too many toys, they may begin to believe that everything in the room can become a toy, including your things.

Be sure to participate in playtime with your puppy, and help create a favorite toy that the puppy will recognize and prefer. Choose fun toys, with action, like a bouncy hard rubber ball, or chew bone. If the toy is one that has something inside for noise or rattle, be sure to supervise play to watch for pieces or anything that comes out and should be taken away to prevent choking. Rope pull toys are lots of fun for puppy and owner. The rope should be a tough, chewable rope; some are even made for tooth care. Choose toys that are easy to clean.

Do not give puppy table scrap bones. Choose bleached hard bones that are durable, and inspect them for sharp cracks or chipping, then get another. Rawhide bones can be chewed and eaten, but can cause digestion problems. Again, treat puppy like a baby or small child for safety and fun. Take time for picking the right kind of toys for your puppy and you will both have more fun!
