Weve all heard the snickering, and the snide comments, but I say stand tall young one! Youre interested in interior decorating and thats a good thing. Its an art that seldom gets the respect its due. Derided as some kind of half-career, its about time the design-conscience embrace the superior living spaces they inhabit. Much as a painter is alluded for his use of color or light, so too an interior decorator must use the colors in his or her palate to bring a room to life. The difference is painters are usually celebrated and interior decorators derided. Thanks to HGTV, the conception of interior decorating, as a profession, has benefited. But theres still a long road ahead for the beginning decorator. A good interior decorator has to take in the surrounding architecture, the client's tastes, and the client's budget. Its one thing when your dime and something completely different when its not. You have to understand everything about space before you go throwing a pillow on the couch or taking down the mini-blinds. If the idea of decorating for the rest o f your life appeals to your sense of purpose and artistry, you must prepare. You must get educated. There are a host of good schools geared towards producing qualified graduates. Regardless of where you enroll, you will more than likely begin your studies with some fundamental course. Design 101, all the way. You must explore all the options and think long and hard about where you might like to work. Remember school generally place graduate in local businesses and with local design firms. If the notion of living in New York City is appealing, go to school there. Or at least begin your studies near or around the Big Apple. Please, please, please remember that even with a good degree from a good school, the annual income for interior decorating majors can be hit or miss. More experience and more contacts equal better pay and more prestige. Dont be afraid to mix it up with your classmates and be supportive. The person next to you could be your boss in the future. As your client list grows, so will your bank account. Trust in your abilities and your training and drive straight into the future!
