Parents should know that the risk of having a reaction to a vaccine is much smaller than the risk of serious illness that comes with infectious diseases. Some parents are surprised to learn that children can die of measles, chicken pox, whooping cough and other vaccine-preventable diseases. The bacteria or virus that causes vaccine-preventable diseases and death still exists and can be passed on to people who are not protected by vaccines. Other diseases caused by smoking include heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, and atherosclerosis. These are caused by nicotine which leads to constriction of blood vessels. Smokers are 5 times more likely to suffer a heart attack. Secondhand smoking increases heart disease risk by 25 to 30%. The CDC, hospitals and doctor's offices around the country are intent on pushing the pneumococcal vaccine as a safe and effective way to reduce the burden of pneumonia on society. It's touted as being especially important for the elderly population to get this vaccine, as they are not only more prone to GET pneumonia, but more prone to dying from it or becoming critically ill. Certain factors can predispose a person to bacterial and viral pneumonia-chronic illness and debilitation, cancer (especially lung cancer), abdominal or chest surgery, atelectasis (the collapse of air sacs in the lung), the flu, common colds or other viral respiratory infections, chronic respiratory disease (such a, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, bronchiectasis, or cystic fibrosis), smoking, malnutrition, alcoholism, sickle cell disease, tracheostomy, exposure to harmful gases, aspiration, and drugs that suppress the immune system. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is usually diagnosed in people 40 years old or older, and is a major cause of death and illness throughout the world. In the U.S.A., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the 4th leading cause of death. There is no cure for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is not a contagious disease. Damage to airways and lungs cannot be reversed. There are only things you can do to feel better and slow the damage to your lungs. Nicotine causes constriction of blood vessels which leads to blockage. The effects of nicotine cause smoking to develop diseases like heart attack, atherosclerosis, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. Smokers below 40 years of age are 5 time more likely to suffer a heart attack. Passive smokers have a heart disease risk of 25 to 30%. Risks of smoking may cause the development of atherosclerosis, heart attack, peripheral vascular disease, heart disease, and stroke. Smokers are 5 times more likely to suffer a heart attack. Passive smoking increases the risk of nonsmokers to develop heart disease by 25 to 30%. The influenza vaccine is an annual vaccine to help protect against strains of influenza expected to circulate that year. This vaccine is available as an injection for all ages and as a nasal spray for those under 50. The influenza vaccine is particularly important for adults age 50 and over, pregnant women and adults with a chronic health condition such as heart disease.
