Police Oral Exam: Knowing What To Expect

By: Donald Cirillo Home | Reference-and-Education

What is the Police Oral Board Looking For?

Becoming a cop will be the proudest moment in your life but getting there can be the hardest thing you will have ever done. The police oral exam you go through can be difficult if you're not prepared beforehand.

Conducted by a number of senior Police officers, the police oral exam can be daunting when you're seated opposite these senior officers as they ask you questions on anything and everything while they get an idea about you as a person and about some of the life skills you possess.

Common Sense

Use a little common sense when preparing for your interview. Take time out to work on what you are going to say and research the position you are applying for. Many of the questions you'll be asked may revolve around why you're interested in law enforcement or how you would react when faced with certain situations.

A part of the reason behind the oral exam is to see how you'll respond under a bit of pressure, without adequate time to think about your responses. While most of your answers should revolve around common sense, the examiners are aware that some people may feel a little stress from this process.

If you think an exam is stressful, imagine being faced with these situations out on the job in uniform.

Confidence

Going into the police oral exam confidently and selling oneself will go a long way in passing the interview. The examiners will want to see candidates who are likely to commit themselves to the entire process of joining the force and becoming a good officer.

Having confidence can show the examiners that even in the face of difficult questions you're able to think clearly and respond with sensible answers.

Be Positive

Another trait you must apply when you are seated in front of examiners as they ask you questions, and that is giving a positive impression. The examiners will want to know that you're articulate and able to answer questions in a concise manner.

Homework

A serious candidate will conduct some research about the job description before they go into the interview. This kind of background knowledge and awareness shows to the interviewer that you took the time and effort to research the position being offered and that you understand the tasks required of you once you begin work. You should also be prepared to answer the question of why you want to enter law enforcement as a career choice. In today's competitive job market you have the availability of the internet making it easier for people to search out facts about job descriptions and opportunities.

And finally...

Having confidence, being positive and exuding enthusiasm are all important factors you should adopt when going for your police oral exam. However you'll find that preparing yourself beforehand with a solid knowledge of the job description and the tasks that will be required of you will go a long way too. That dream job of being a police officer will be one step closer.
