By: Zengolfer Home | Recreation-and-Sports | Golf

Poniente golf course is one of the oldest and original courses in Mallorca, Spain and it is very popular with ardent golfers as it offers a challenging but reasonable test of golf. Spain is lucky to have amongst the best golf courses in the world and Poniente Golf Club is also amongst them. The course is situated on the Calvia Coast, around 15 km from Palma, not very far from the sea and is also very close to the Santa Ponsa and Bendinat golf courses. The coastal towns of Palmanova and Magaluf are very near to Poniente which makes the position of this course exceptional. It was opened in 1978 the course has 18 holes, and plays to the par of 72.

Poniente has broad fairways with several credulous slopes and huge greens which can be fast and tricky at times. Poniente Golf Course, designed by John Harris is enclosed by Mediterranean vegetation, a combination of woodland, lakes, the wonderful fairways with an ideal terrain and conditions for playing golf. It has been specifically designed to confront golfers and amalgamates level holes with the deeper ones. The course has six water hazards and several bunkers to make the game more complex and exciting.

It is generally an easy course to walk but there are some hills, which you will have to tackle in the back nine. You may have to book early if you want to engage a buggy. In case you want to polish some aspects of your game, it is possible to take private, professional golf lessons at the Poniente golf club. This will help you to improve different facets of your game of golf.

Many of the holes at the Poniente course are very attractive as well as challenging and can be said to be some of the best on Mallorca. The course is maintained to the best standards and you will find golfers at any time of the day discussing their game at the 19th. The initial four holes start off gently but you can really feel the challenge and the intrigue between the 7th and the 10th. You have to play the 8th hole blind and it falls down steeply into the gorge right below. There are spectacular views from these large greens which are surrounded by palms.

Be very cautious on the 10th as it can be very tricky and different every time you play it. It can in fact intimidate you from the tee. There are high reed beds and water on the right side and you will find bunkers guarding the run-off at the closing stages of the fairway. On the first look the green looks unreachable, but it is not that difficult and you can carry over the water with a smart strike.

In most cases when you pre book a tee time at the Poniente Golf Club, it offers you complimentary admission to the practice facilities of golf like the putting and chipping greens as well as the driving range. The course offers varied landscape and is a wonderful and traditional golf club with a very welcoming group of staff and all kinds of facilities.
