Pool Winterizing Chemical Kits

By: JamesC Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Improvement

Owning a swimming pool translates to hours of great fun with friends and family during the warmer months of the year. However, in order to make sure that you can enjoy your pool for many years to come and to make spring openings go smoothly and quickly, it's extremely important to provide your swimming pool with proper winter maintenance. This involves closing your pool the right way, with the help of quality winter pool covers and pool winterizing kits. By using the right pool winterizing chemical kits in the right way, you will keep your swimming pool cleaner and in better condition so that you can enjoy easy spring openings year after year.

Swimming pool winterizing kits are packages of specially formulated pool chemicals that provide you with all the different chemicals you need to prepare your pool for the winter months when it will lie idle and unused. When you properly close your pool with the right chemicals, you will be providing your swimming pool with protection from damage caused by freezing, wear and tear and water contamination. Naturally, this will extend the life of your swimming pool while also making it easier to open your pool again with the arrival of spring.

In particular, the chemicals included in pool chemical kits will kill contaminants and deprive the swimming pool water of carbon dioxide, which is one of algae's primary food sources. Better yet, non-chlorine swimming pool winterizing kits will perform these tasks without staining, bleaching or otherwise damaging the lining of your pool. As a result, pool winterizing chemical kits allow you to enjoy clean, clear water each spring without causing any unnecessary damage to your pool.

Typical pool winterizing kits will contain several different products which perform particular functions and together increase the effectiveness of the overall winterizing process. For example, common chemicals found in swimming pool winterizing kits include a winterizing inhibitor, winter stain-away, shock and an oxidizer. Some pool chemical kits also include a special time-release floater which allows for the continued release of the oxidizing chemical long after you have closed the pool for the winter. The oxidizer is what deprives the water of carbon dioxide which, as previously mentioned, is required for algae growth. Therefore, the oxidizer plays an extremely important role in keeping the pool's water clean and crystal clear.

Pool winterizing kits may contain either chlorine shock or non-chlorine shock. In either case, this component of the kit serves to burn off any impurities or contaminants contained in the water. The benefit of chlorine-free shock is that it removes contaminants without reducing the effectiveness of other chemicals and without damaging the pool's liner. As listed above, another common component of swimming pool winterizing kits is winter stain-away. This specially formulated substance helps to remove potentially damaging metals and minerals from the swimming pool water. Since certain metals and minerals can stain pool linings and cause stubborn build-up along the waterline, winter stain-away can provide your swimming pool with substantial protection and will make your life far easier.

Pool winterizing chemical kits may also include products for additional winterizing steps. For example, some kits will come with a chemical which combines with the other products in the package to provide an extra, powerful defence against algae growth. Also, other chemicals may be used to absorb significant amounts of suntan lotions and body oils which accumulate in pool water during the swimming season. Since lotions and oils can cause grease and grime to build up along the waterline, such chemicals obviously provide a great advantage when preparing your pool for the winter.

As already mentioned, pool winterizing kits are available in both chlorine and chlorine-free varieties. Many people prefer chlorine-free pool chemical kits because they prevent damage that can potentially be caused by chlorine winterizing packages. Therefore, chlorine-free swimming pool winterizing kits provide highly effective sanitization and protection without staining or bleaching the lining of your pool. In addition, since non-chlorine pool chemical kits won't reduce the effectiveness of algae-killing chemicals and other winterizing substances, they provide even greater sanitizing power.

When choosing a winterizing kit to use while closing your swimming pool, it's important to make the right selection in order to enjoy the best results possible. Pool winterizing chemical kits are specially formulated for use in pools of particular sizes. Therefore, you need to make sure that you purchase a kit based on the size of your swimming pool. Most chemical packages come with detailed instructions so it's easy to figure out how to close your pool properly. Although your pump and filter won't be running during the cold winter months, swimming pool winterizing kits will provide you with everything you need to keep your pool protected, clean and algae-free. Then, when spring finally arrives, you can quickly get back to enjoying hours of swimming fun.
