Portland Real Estate Seems To Be Showing Signs Of Recovery

By: Andrew E Home | Finance | Real Estate

Homes for Sale in Portland
Portland planners have been particularly cautious to avoid increasing housing density, a fact that can easily be displayed when you compare the size and population density of Seattle with that of Portland:
Seattle Portland
Housing Units 270,524 237,307
Average Density 1,245.4/km2 682.1/km2
People per Sq. Mile 6,717.20 4,228.83
City Size 83 square miles 134 square miles
It is widely acknowledged by its inhabitants that Portland is an environmentally friendly city to live in and, overall, a pleasant place to live. Within the city precincts which are limited by the confluence of two rivers as well as surrounding mountain ranges, there are few, if any, empty spaces for buiding new homes for sale in Portland. Developers get round this by either incorporating stilt technology into their building designs, building new Portland Oregon homes for sale by demolishing older properties, or remodeling existing properties. Either way, Portland real estate tends to remain desirable, despite the downturn in the property market.
Increasing Housing Density
Despite newer properties being built in the suburbs of the highlands, Portland is attempting to incorporate Urban Boundary Areas as a means of limiting urban sprawl. The only way they can achieve this is through increasing the number of people per square mile: in other words, by increasing housing density. There are advocates and opponents to both limiting urban sprawl and to increasing population density. One way of increasing population density is to build town houses in downtown Portland. Despite these properties being smaller and within close proximity of their neighbors, these Portland homes for sale are considered to be desirable Portland Oregon real estate, especially in terms of value for money. One of these places is close to the waterfront where lofts and condos are becoming a valuable addition to Portland real estate.
Housing Styles Particular to Portland
Whether it is a bungalow style or a loft, there are various building designs that are becoming popular sites in Portland. The most common and popular style of property built in Portland is known as the â€Arts and Crafts’ style. This involves cantilevered floors, bay windows and steeply pitched gables, often with dormer windows set into the wood shingled roofs. Generally, due to their being so prolific, these tend to frequently come on the market as homes for sale in Portland.
Another style that is ubiquitously American is the Loren Waxman style of property, also referred to as the â€Craftsman’ style. This design tends to be characterized by its fairly steep roof and the depth of its eaves. Then, of course, there is the iconic â€Portland’ style of house. This can be distinguished by its wide, spacious porch and perfect symmetry that includes plenty of paneling and moldings as an integral part of this house.
