Possible Causes Of Eye Twitching

By: Rick Martin Home | Health-and-Fitness

It happens for many people to experience a series of involuntary spasms of the eyelids. In some cases, the eyelid spasm comes and goes in a matter of seconds. On the other hand, there are cases where the fluttering eyelid will not give up that easily. It may accompany you for months, by making itself felt every now and then. People tend to worry when such conditions install for more than just a few days. However, a fluttering eyelid disorder should bring no reason for worry if it appears for a day or two generally, in an irregular manner and then quickly disappears. To what concerns the cases where the eyelid spasm extends over longer time intervals such as several months, with the corresponding interruptions, of course the sufferer(s) should consult a specialist to find out if some underlying condition is its reason.

In very simple words, most of the fluttering eyelid conditions are nothing more than a disorder related to the eye function of blinking. Some people experience the eye muscle spasm in their left eye, others experience it in their right eye, yet others feel the spasm under the eye. Usually, you will not come across life-threatening eye muscle spasms, unless there is an underlying condition associated with them. In the cases where other disorders are also influencing your health, such disorders usually imply the nervous system of the human body. For instance, fluttering eyelid conditions may associate with Tourette's syndrome and a series of neurological complications, but it may also accompany dry eyes. If you suspect that there may be any underlying neurological cause to your eye twitching disorder, the general recommendation is to consult your doctor.

Usually, patients who experience eye twitching have normal eyes, in the sense that they do not undergo any troubles with their sightseeing except for the bother generated by the involuntary movements of the eyelids. On the other hand, do pay attention that you do not take eye twitching for another eye disorder, namely ptosis. The latter appears as a bending of the eyelids of which a paralysis in the eyelid may be the cause. This is obviously a severe condition and you should consult your physician immediately. To what concerns eye twitching, at least from what researchers have observed up to this point, minor cases almost never aggravate unless more severe disorders are their real cause.

In general, eyelid twitches begin with annoying, repeated blinking that rapidly associates with the irritation of the affected eye. Such repeated blinking may have as a cause an unusual exposure to certain irritant, exterior factors, such as light, warmth or cold circumstances. Excessively bright light soon triggers rapid movements of the eyelid, particularly in the cases of patients who are more sensitive to the influence of exterior factors. In addition, if fatigue installs or if lately you have experienced stressful situations, they may represent one of the causes of your eye twitching.

You should pay attention to the frequency of the eyelid spasms. If the condition has just installed, the spasms may not be very frequent. However, if the condition persists all throughout the day, you may notice an increase in the frequency of the eye muscle twitches. Usually, patients have observed that the spasms tend to decrease if they simply rest their eyes for a while or if they take a nap. You might also notice that after a nighttime's sleep, the spasms will appear only isolated or they will even disappear completely. Nevertheless, if you notice no change in your condition after you have taken some time to sleep, and the spasms appear to have multiplied their numbers and frequency, you could find yourself in the situation where you cannot open your eyes simply because the eyelids have shut. Too many spasms may lead to such a manifestation. In any case, this is a sign that you should get supplementary advice as to what you should do next.
