Potential Complications Associated With Knee & Hip Replacement Surgery

By: jonny wagh Home | Health-and-Fitness

Pain in joints is a common problem that an individual has to face when he gets old. This painful condition of the joints has been medically termed as arthritis. Almost everyone is attacked by it as soon as he or she attains the age of forty and above. The pain has, however, been found to be so acute that it becomes tough for the patients to bear. In such a scenario, the arthritics look for a viable option to get rid of the pain they suffer from. The most common joints that are subject to its attack are knee and hip joints, to cure which knee replacement as well as hip replacement surgical process has been introduced.

Well, being a surgical process, if the knee and hip replacement surgeries show positive results, they do have negative side as well. Opting for a joint surgery is quite an easy decision, but before that you must know the various complications associated with the process.

Hip Replacement & Knee Replacement †Possible Complications
Some of the common risks associated with the hip and knee replacement surgery are as follows:

  • Clotting of Blood:
  • The most common negative effect of the knee and hip replacement surgery is blood clotting, which is observed in the large veins of the legs and pelvis region. To reduce the development of blood clots during the post-surgical stage, however, the doctors put the patients under blood thinning medication which continues for many weeks. With the help of compression stockings, the surgeon ensures that the blood in the patient’s legs remains circulating. In case if the development of the blood clots continues, it moves towards the lungs making the treatment a complete failure.

  • Infections:
  • This is again a severe risk of the hip and knee replacement surgery. The effect is so acute that the patients are bound to remove their implants for a better life. This is the complication which does not necessarily come into notice at initial stage. It takes quite a few days or even weeks to come to notice. However, late infections may take years to affect the health of the patients. If the infection is an early one, it can easily be removed or cleared by surgical means. However, when the process is invasive, the surgeons will themselves provide you some antibiotics to take in to avoid the risk of getting infected in any way.

  • Stiffness:
  • Whenever any surgery is performed, scar tissues are formed within the body, which is a natural procedure. In case of knee or hip replacement surgery, if this happens, it might create difficulty for the patients in bending the legs or climbing stairs, etc. Therefore, it is advised to the arthritics that they must continue their daily activities as soon as the surgery is complete.

  • Failure of Implant:
  • Loosening of the implants is a common problem with the patients who undergo hip and knee replacement surgery. New technologies have helped to resolve this problem, but the complications still occur. Revision replacement is a perfect treatment in such a scenario.

Thus, before you opt for any of the joint replacement surgeries, either knee or hip replacement, make sure you know well the complications that might chase you after undergoing the treatment.
