Prepaid Debit Card Penalty Fees You Need To Know About

By: Tara Tiemann Home | Business

Most people are choosing a prepaid debit card because they won't have to pay for any interest. This means less fees to think about. Each time you use a debit card, the amount is being deducted from the existing cash deposited so there is no need for further APR costs.

However, holders of this type of card need to be careful of probable penalty charges. What might be a $50 worth of purchase may suddenly become $80 or maybe more because of the additional charges. What are these types of penalty charges?

The following are some of the debit card charges you need to watch out for:

Negative Balance Penalty. Holders can only use their debit cards for any payment as long as there is an available balance into the account. Though there can be circumstances when the purchase might exceed the accessible balance. In this instance, the transaction might still be accepted but the owner is going to be charged with a penalty fee.

Decline Charge. Once again, prepaid debit card holders are not permitted to overdraw. Therefore, if the holder attempts to make a purchase order which is too large compared to the available balance, the transaction will most likely be declined and the card holder will be penalized for making an attempt.

Daily Limit Penalty. Several prepaid debit card companies impose a limit for each amount of transaction the card holder can make on a daily basis. Going beyond that limit could mean extra penalty fees.

Inactivity Fee. Definitely, not using the debit card within the specified period of time could also cost an additional charges.

Customer Service Charge. Some Issuers may not allow cost-free assistance. Others may offer one free live customer call month for month but may bill a fee for the corresponding calls (it may range from $.50-$2.00 per call) Thus, before calling the debit card's hotline number, check out how much will be charged on it.

Account Termination Penalty. Are you planning to close the account? If yes, the debit card Issuer may penalize the card holder for terminating their service ($15 or more).

Card replacement. In the event the card holder lose the debit card, there is a fee for replacing the card. Visa and MasterCard may charge for $10 most of this.

ATM Balance Inquiry. Do you wish to inquire your account's balance? Watch out! Checking through the nearest ATM may possibly cost a charge from $.50 to $1.00, depending on the type of debit card used.

Currency Conversion. Currency conversion rates are not merely applicable to regular credit cards but to prepaid debit cards as well. That is why checking the foreign exchange rate is important before making use of your prepaid card abroad. In particular, Visa Prepaid Debit Card charges 2% while MasterCard Debit Card charges 2.95% currency conversion rate out of the total amount of purchase.

Choose and Use The Debit Card Wisely

Basically, it is important to verify the fine print before placing card holder's signature on the debit credit card. Take some time to do your own investigation when looking for the right debit card. The most important thing to remember if you want to avoid having to pay for penalty and maintenance debit card fees is to become familiar with the privileges and limitations that come with your chosen card. It is still a must to read carefully and understand the Terms and conditions regardless of the fact that debit cards are easier to obtain.
