Prognosis Of Autism

By: john frict Home | Health-and-Fitness

Autism remains a challenging condition for individuals and their families, but the prognosis of autism today is much better than it was a generation ago. At that time, most people with autism were placed in institutions. Today, with appropriate therapy, many of the symptoms of autism can be improved, though most people will have some symptoms throughout their lives. Most people with autism are able to live with their families or in the community.

The prognosis of autism for children is surprisingly alarming and consistent across a broad range of studies about 2% will attain normal functioning, with perhaps 30% labeled "high-functioning autistic." These high-functioning autistics generally show some oddity in behavior, have a tough time relating to others, and have few or no personal friends.  While the majority of individuals with autism live an unconventional and confused life, dependent on the care of others to survive. The earlier these children receive appropriate treatment, the better their prognosis. A good predictor of a prognosis for your child maybe the progress they have made over a period of time, approximately one year from early diagnosis.

Factors that can affect the prognosis for autism include:

  • IQ

  • Language development

  • Communication ability

  • Social skills

  • General level of impairment

Symptoms in many children with autism improve with intervention or as the children mature. Some people with autism eventually lead normal or near-normal lives. About a third of children with autistic spectrum disorders eventually develop epilepsy. The risk is highest in children with severe cognitive impairment and motor deficits. Adolescence may worsen behavior problems in some children with autism, which may become depressed or increasingly unmanageable. Parents should be ready to adjust treatment for their child's changing needs.

Autism is associated with several other conditions:

  • Genetic disorders.

  • Mental retardation.

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Epilepsy,

  • Several metabolic defects,

  • Minor physical anomalies

  • Preempted diagnoses.

Quality of life for a person with autism depends on being involved with other people and being included in activities with others. It appears that advocates, friends, and family who include, interpret, and assist the individual with autism is vital to their success.
