Project management is a carefully planned and organized effort to achieve a task or an objective. The objective includes developing a plan, defining and conforming project goals and objectives and identifying tasks and means for achieving those objectives in the most effective and time bound manner. It also involves quantifying resources, determining budgets and deciding on the time schedule for completion the various phases of the project. The project manager is responsible for the planning, execution and successful completion of a project using the above-mentioned parameters.

A project manager is an important functionary in almost all fields of infrastructure development like construction, architecture, software development, telecommunications, heavy engineering and other such industries, which are major contributors to the process of nation building. In the field of project management, the task of visualizing, creating and developing clear and attainable development plans is the prime responsibility of the manager.

Responsibilities also include managing the team members associated with the project and assigning them tasks depending on their skills and abilities. The manager has to also follow up on the progress connected to various activities linked to a project and coordinate the working of various groups to lead them towards the common end objective. Another crucial task involves synchronizing the works of various teams so that the delay in work of one department does not affect the progress of the other.

The project manager is often the fulcrum around which the working of other departments revolves. The job demands high levels of efficiency and commitment to successfully synchronize the working of various departments towards the common objective of successfully completing the project. To achieve the objectives of a project, the managers have at their disposal a variety of tools and techniques, which they can use effectively to give the project a proper and successful closure. Work schedule break ups, critical path analysis and project development management systems are important mechanisms which an expert project manager can utilize to achieve the project's objectives.

An effective team is the heart of any project. The selection of the team is usually based on the technical skills of the person. Experience and commitment levels are also crucial selection parameters. The most important thing for a project manager to ensure is that the teams have the right chemistry. Teams working at cross-purposes are detrimental to the successful and timely completion of the project.

Risk is an inherent factor in any project. The high levels of uncertainty in various aspects of the project before its actual implementation are usually the main cause of risk. The task of the project manager and his team is to reduce the risks, by ensuring better communication and a policy of openness among the various agencies involved.

Construction management is an important component in the field of construction services. With growing levels of standardization applied to almost all aspects of the construction industry, the role of a project manager comes with high responsibility. They are responsible for compliance of various statutory requirements of construction as well as ensure that all the safety parameters are strictly implemented, in terms of labor management, the actual construction process and in the quality and ratio of the materials used.
