Pros And Cons Of Accepting Reward Cards

By: paynet Home | Finance | Credit

Of all the credit cards issued in the United States today, as many as 60% are reward cards or at least contain some reward component. The fact that cardholders are now positioned to gain much more from their credit cards, has made the market increasingly competitive.

Reward cards offer attractive perks, for instance, credit card holders can get cash back or discounts on purchases, and even major giveaways such as free flights. As credit card issuing banks get more competitive, the rewards offered by these cards are getting ever more attractive and sophisticated.

This is good news for credit card issuing banks because they get to boost customer numbers. However, it doesn’t benefit the merchants in quite the same way. Merchants are paying the price for reward credit cards. They have to accept reward cards as a fact of business life.

Transactions involving reward cards are expensive to process. Most merchants process transactions at a mid-qualified or non-qualified rate, both of which are significantly more expensive than the qualified rate paid on standard credit cards. These higher rates can be a significant tax on merchants for accepting reward cards, which are now even more common than standard credit cards.

There are also some benefits for merchants . If a reward card rewards a cardholder for shopping at a certain business, then that business will benefit from the extra patronage. Also, some cards offer rewards on a number of fronts, no matter where the card is used. Because of this, reward card holders spend more than 30 per cent on their cards in a bid to build up rewards. This equates to more business for merchants that accept cards.

Because of this, it is now more important than ever to accept credit cards and even reward card payments if you are a merchant.

In the long run, reward cards are likely to bring more business to a given business. By selecting an affordable merchant provider, a merchant can assuage the burden of paying more for their customers’ use of reward cards. Moreover, it is now easier for merchants to get involved in credit card reward programs because they have become more targeted. It is easier for smaller merchants to get involved.

Reward cards have both pros and cons for merchants . Prudence is advised when shopping for the best merchant account deal †one that does not inflate rates. The right merchant account will make reward cars rewarding for merchants as well.
