Psyllium Side Effects - Are You At Risk?

By: Jacob Sikais Home | Health-and-Fitness

Psyllium is defined as a fiber laxative and works by taking in the liquid present in the intestines and finally creating a bulky and softer stool which is simpler to pass. It is used for treating bowel irregularity or occasional constipation. It is also used for treating diarrhea and can help in lowering cholesterol when combined with a low saturated fat and low cholesterol diet.

Laxatives can be habit-forming if you use them for a prolonged period of time or frequently. This may damage the muscle tissues or intestinal nerves. Prefer taking Psyllium as recommended by your physician. Avoid taking it if you are allergic to any of the ingredients present in Psyllium or if you have difficulty swallowing. In addition to those mentioned above, stop taking Psyllium if your bowel habits change and last for more than two weeks or so, vomiting, severe nausea, skin rash or stomach pain after taking this medicine.

Make sure you consult with your doctor prior to taking Psyllium if you have ileostomy or colostomy, rectal bleeding or a blockage in the intestines. All medicines can lead to side effects; however, many people have little or no Psyllium side effects. Consult your doctor if you experience any of the common side effects included below:

- Abdominal fullness; - Minor bloating.

Apart from the common Psyllium side effects included above, ensure consulting your doctor at the earliest if you experience any of the side effects included below after taking Psyllium.

- Severe allergic reactions (hives; rash; tightness in the chest; difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, or tongue); - Chest pain; - Difficulty swallowing; - Trouble breathing; - Vomiting; - Stomach cramping; - Gassy or bloated feeling; - Headache.

If you suffer from some conditions like ileostomy or colostomy, rectal bleeding or intestinal blockage then prefer carrying out special tests prior to using Psyllium. Psyllium products can contain sodium, sugar or artificial sweeteners. Hence, people with high blood pressure, diabetes or phenylketonuria should consult their doctor before taking Psyllium.

Psyllium isn't expected to cause harm to unborn babies. If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant then prefer consulting your doctor prior to taking Psyllium. Avoid taking this medicated drug if you're breast feeding a child.

In addition to those included above, there are other Psyllium side effects as well. Contact your doctor to know more about them.

Mix Psyllium in one glass of water and take it orally. Make sure you read the instructions inscribed on the package labeling carefully prior to taking this medicine. Over and above you need to also consult your medical practitioner for the exact dosage direction. In general, you need to mix Psyllium with eight ounces or more of water. If you think that the drink has thickened, you can add more water. Prefer taking the medicine at routine intervals.

To avoid Psyllium side effects in children make sure that you consult your pediatrician. If you think that you've consumed Psyllium in excessive amount, make sure you contact the emergency room or poison control center at the earliest.
