Pug Dog Health Care Tips

By: Lee Dobbins... Home |

Pugs are quite popular today not only for their pleasing personality, but also for their loyal companionship. Although generally quite healthy, there are some pug dog health concerns that are specific to this breed of dog.

This breed has been with us for over three thousand years, and this short haired animal has been a member of the AKC Toy group since 1885. You probably would recognize one on sight from its flat wrinkly face, thickset body, and curly tail. Pugs generally weigh between 13 and 20 pounds and are about 10 to 14 inches tall.

Ironically, it is these very unique features that actually attribute to the unique health concerns of the breed. However, this should not deter you from adopting one as providing the proper care to avoid these health issues is really quite simple.

First, there is the dog's wrinkly skin. Unfortunately, your pug's adorable skin folds are prone to infection -- you must consult your veterinarian immediately at the first signs of infection. You should bathe and clean your pug regularly -- particularly making sure you clean in between the wrinkles, removing any dirt or debris because that can cause bacteria build up (which could lead to infection).

Another factor which could cause pug dog health problems is its eyes. Because of its peculiar shape and location on the face, the pug's eyes are not protected properly and are prone to injury and other problems. Look for any inflammation in the eye regularly and take the dog to the Vet immediately if you identify any problem in the surrounding area.

Weight gain is another problem, commonly found in pugs, which could have an adverse effect on their health. Pugs as a breed has a tendency to overeat, so be careful about your pets food intake and maintain its weight at healthy limits.

Pugs are very sensitive to humidity as well as heat and prolonged exposure to either can cause them to have a hard time breathing. Always make sure they are kept in a cool area, especially in summertime.

A good health care regimen for your pet Pug means a long, happy life together. Responsible pet ownership includes taking care of your pet. Proper nutrition, grooming and regular visits to your vet, will assure proper Pug dog health is maintained.
