I love sports cars. Consider this an open letter to sports cars. I want to declare my love. I want to shout it from the rooftops. There truly is nothing like kicking one into gear as you fly down the highway, windows down and blasting Queen, the subtle scent of ecstasy tearing through your nostrils, riding the waves of the moderate summer air. This was my first experience driving a sports car, and since then, I haven’t been able to imagine myself behind the wheel of any other vehicle, not even a luxury car, not even a BMW. My friend Johnny would argue that men are intrinsically wired to connect with the revving of a high power engine, the sleek, sexy exterior of the traditional sports car, the supple shriek of the wind noises in our ears. I disagree with Johnny simply because I’ve known men, men who can’t fathom the otherworldly pleasure of floating weightlessly on a cloud of pure speed †alluring, devil-driving speed as you clutch the leather with your bare hands. You Pugi Mazda dealers know exactly what I’m talking about, because you’ve felt the sheer awe of caressing the wheel as you fly down I-90 in the summertime. If you want a simplistic testimony as to why the Mazda Miata makes this year’s 10Best Cars list, I’d say it has to do with the uproarious power you can get between your fingertips at such an astoundingly low price. Indeed, it seems that Downers Grove Mazda dealers have fallen into a perfect situation †that being the elusive cost-effectiveness of owning a sports car. The last time I walked into a Mazda dealer in Downers Grove, I left wearing a smile that not even the strongest, most dedicated pessimist could tear from my lips. This must be what heaven feels like, 70 miles per hour out in the concrete wilderness. Now that I’ve embellished the hell out of the sports car driving experience, let’s take a look at the Miata’s haves and have-nots. What it doesn’t have is white-fisted power; the Miata’s 2.0-liter four only puts out 167 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque †but that doesn’t mean the car doesn’t handle like a dream, and you can see exactly where I’m going with this when you visit a Pugi Mazda dealer. What the Miata lacks in power it makes up for in finesse, handling and general road skill. Shifting is a piece of cake, and the car steers like a charm. If you don’t believe me, then head down to your Mazda dealer in Downers Grove to find out for yourself. The car itself is a nearly a steal, with a price range beginning at $23,560 and extending no further than the $30k mark. When you reach that $30k mark, you’ll get great add-ons like leather interior and a power-retractable hard top. Downers Grove Mazda drivers get great performance and a sexy look at a spectacular price †which leaves me wondering why everyone else hasn’t jumped on the bandwagon.
